New San Diego Player with some questions

Hi guys, my girlfriend and I are excited to join the Malifaux community and start playing soon. We reside in San Diego and am hoping to find other players. Before we start and make any purchases I have a few questions I'm hoping you can answer

Is the game strictly a two player game or can multiple players join in the fight?

Since none of us really know what to buy, we plan on just picking our favorite starter box from our chosen faction. If we both picked a random box, would this cause any issues with balance? Say pick a crew and she picks one, would one have any glaring advantages?

Any replies would be appreciated

Is the game strictly 2 player?

Noooo............... but it is balanced around 2 players. There are scenario's that are made for more people than 2 in the excellent (and free) Wyrd Chronicles, but they are like chocolate, best in small squares.

As for buying random boxes, on the whole there should be no major issues, but if you happen to buy basic boxes where one is actually designed to -stop- the other one, you could run into some problems. Fortunately, this is a pretty rare situation with so many boxes out. Having the same amount of "points" (soulstones in Malifaux) from each box will probably be more of an issue however.

Welcome to Malifaux!

Yeah, I have to agree and disagree with Carcosa there. If you buy some random boxes, you will run into some major issues. That doesn't mean the models will be stronger, but the point sizes included in the boxes are vastly different. Ophelia, Perdita and Ramos can pretty much play 50 SS (the usual game size) right out of the box, while Kirai and Dreamer struggle to get a legal crew at all.

Your best bet would probably be to take the two most appealing boxes, and then come back here and ask around what to add. This forum is very open and friendly to such questions, and has a great response time....

Well...........

Lets look at the boxes.

The Thunder (Misaki's Crew) has:

Misaki: 0 stones/points (as masters are "free")

Ototo: 10 stones/points

3 Torakage: 5 stones/points per model.

Shang: 3 stones/points

Grand total of 28 stones/points for the box without any additions/upgrades (upgrades are cards that give extra abilities, or modify existing ones)

Now, this box is a very melee focussed crew, so against a ranged crew, it could run into some problems as models -will- die before becoming what she may feel as useful models. It -does- have some tricks to compensate for that once you get the hang of things, but it -will- take time to get there.

Compare That to Von Shill:

Shill: 0 cost

Trapper: 6 stones

2 Freikorpsman: 10 stones

Specialist: 8 stones

Librarian: 7 stones

Steam Trunk: 3 stones

Total cost: 34 stones.

This box has 1 more model, and costs 6 stones/points more, so you can appreciate that they are not exactly balanced "out of the gate" Not only that, the Misaki crew box has 3 "generalist" models (the torakage) in comparison to the 2 generalist (freikorpsman) models of the Shill box, and the extra stones are used to buy more specialist models which are more useful to the crew.

In short, the boxes -as single entities- are really not always balanced, they often contain specialist characters that you may only ever want (or be allowed) to use one of, and it makes more sense for Wyrd (and most of the time, players) to sell them as part of a box.

To off-set this, I would recommend you allow your GF to buy an extra box of mini's to work with her crew, be that a single character, or a group, and then you work up to her Soulstone cost for the crew.

so how about the body of evidence box? would that be a more reasonable choice?

Reasonable? This is its size according to GMort:

McMourning (0), Zombie Chihuahua (2), Sebastian (7), Flesh Construct (6), Canine Remains (4), Nurses (5, 5) Total (29) or (32) with a maximum Soulstone cache and (37) or (38) with maximum 'out of the box' upgrades depending on whether you're playing him as Guild or Resurrectionist.

Still, it would probably need additional models.

Crew boxes are not starter boxes. They start you with a Master, not the game. If you want a box to start the game with, be your choice.

Well no. Not in either factions. If you want to play him Rezzer side you'd need more Flesh constructs, Canine Remains, Guild Autopsies (not available), Rafkin (not avalaible) for starters.

On Guild you'd need even more crew boxes and minion models etc to get him running.

To laughingmanXD

-on the surface-, the Body of evidence box would be more comparable as the Soulstone count is much closer, but as both our resident guild nut (Dirial) and Resser nut (Zfiend) note, the boxes are just not complete at the roughly 30 stone mark.

IF you were to choose those two boxes I would recommend an extra buy-in of another crew box for you, and let your GF get 2 other smaller boxes.

For you and Doctor Doug, if you go Guild side, I would recommend........................ Probably Sonnia Crid. Not so much because the it is the most -optimal- use of the extra bucks (that would be the latigo posse) but because the Witchling stalkers are a awesome middle of the range model, and they compliment the nurses to a good degree, and Sam Hopkins would be a good addition to a survivable master like Doug.

If you want to go Resser side however, ummmm I am not too sure, Zfiend is the man to ask. On the surface, I would go for Nicodem because it has the most amount of functional models in your existing crew. Ressers however are a interesting case because the crew you start with is very often not the crew you end up with due to their ability to summon new models. They really are the money sinkhole of malifaux because you can use so much in just one crew over time. That's not a bad thing, but it -is- something you should be aware of going in.

As for additions to Misaki.

For a crew box, I would probably go the Viktoria's as they have the Ronin which fit into the melee focussed crew. That does however limit her playstyle to melee. Other options could be the katanakana Snipers to give you some ranged cover (or the 10 Thunder Archers) if she wants to stay 10 thunders. For having her as an Outcast, you -could- get the Von shill box and have her with the Freikorps.

My -BEST- advice would be:

Ask a crap load of questions here, cause we like to help :)

Check out the brain trust that is the Pullmyfinger wiki

Hop into the chat, and ask a random person their advice in real time.

Lastly.

Buy the mini's you think are cool!!!

The community will help you with the rest if you ask, but playing the crew you really enjoy the look or feel of is one of the best things about malifaux. Some may need some more "out of the box" support or help, sure, but if you -enjoy- the crew, it can pretty much be "made to work", because they are all good.
