Do you collect masters or factions?

I started with Masters but like many others here I bought more models for them I found I had to buy starter sets to get henchmen, models etc and so I ended up delving into other Masters. When I hit Ten Thunders I found myself buying models from both factions for my masters which then lead into other factions and my collection went a bit crazy from there as you can see in my Signature. Not the most impressive collection out there but it all started because of Misaki. Misaki lead to the Viks who lead to Von Schill who lead to Tara who lead to Lady Justice and it just kinda of went on from there  :D

Good question...

At first I would say faction as when I started I was only really interested in Guild.

But then I started seeing the releases and got interested in other masters rather than solely Guild ones.

So at present I am collecting all Guild and Gremlin models and also have/aim to have crews across all the other factions.

Variety is the spice of life!

When M2E hit, I was already in pretty deep, most Neverborn, a substantial chunk of Ressers and Guild and a decent smattering of everything else. I loved the new art direction so much, when I was at Gencon on 2013, I just bought everything that was available. Since then, the only released (including early and special releases) crew boxes I don't have are Hired Guns, Latigo Posse, Torch and Blade, M&SU, Of Metal and Flesh, and Spirits of Vengeance. There are a hand full of mostly Guild and Outcast boxes I don't have (somewhere around 10). About 90% of it is painted.

My thought process has been, at least since M2E, "gotta catch 'em all," transferred from a much more faction-loyal perspective in 1.5. I remember when the second book was coming out (was it Rising Powers? Been a while since I thought about it.) and I saw the painted Kirai model in an advertisement and got super psyched when I found out she was a Ressurectionist, because, "I play that faction!" These days it's more a series of questions leading to an inevitable purchase of...something: Do I have some spare cash? Have I bought models in a while? What's not painted? What am I in the mood to paint? What came out recently? What's everybody in my play group playing lately? What have I had fun playing lately?

I don't like McCabe. I bought him for Sidir and the Wastrels just look really cool.

I don't (really) like Viktorias. I bought them for Student and Taelor.

That's pretty much how it goes for me.

A looooooong time ago I bought a Gremlin Taxidermist as an interesting Goblin proxy for Fantasy. Then I saw western Ghost Riders with coffins and zombie hookers and figured I'd have a look at the rules. Levy was my first master soooooo I pretty much bought a shit ton of stuff for that. My JD crew was mostly proxies (er, still is, right? I've been replacing proxies with slightly better proxies for a time now - Twisted Apparitions will never be replaced as my guilty - those are amazing even though they dwarf JD in comparison).

Long story short - I definently buy for the masters (fixed faction sucks!) and sometimes I'm forced to buy masters I don't even want but I need the other models - its a good marketing strategy, lol.

Arcanists and 10T are the only factions I don't play - not big on guild except for McMourning and Hoffman - and yet I still have a ton of Arcanist minis for Levy. I am more of a collector type player though, so there's that too.

What a great question!

I bought the Taxidermist as a new model 'just to paint' because I loved it, which rapidly became the Som'er box set/loads more gremlins. I then decided I definitely needed a new Master (as I was getting consistently and decisively whupped by Hamelin....), so bought Marcus. Thne  realised I needed tons more beasts (he really is the gift that keeps on giving - there are so many models for him to choose from!). And I REALLY needed Perdita (for my birthday - so it's allowed). And the Von Schill, who I bought on his own, but rapdily gathered a crew around him.

If I'd been more sensible I would have checked what masters would fit in easily with each other/share models. But I didn't. Whoops.

The introductions of Dual Faction is a work of genius!!!

Dual Factions is a nightmare for my bank balance and lack of will.

I started with Yan Lo and as a result now have a hefty chunk of both ressers AND Ten Thunders....

I do like how they feed into each other. Like maybe adding the Freikorps Specialist to a Sonnia crew... may as well buy Hired Guns to do it.. it's a slippery slope.

When I was picking my crew I was choosing between two: Viks and Levi.

Girls with Katanas won although I love Levi's idea - steampunk necromancer. Unfortunately I couldn't stand Levi's metal model so as I said- Viks won the first round.

Then I started to build up crew around Viks but with one restriction - no human male models in the crew and if I wanted a model who is originally male, then I was looking for suitable proxy. Constructs, Killjoy-type models were allowed :)

At the moment I have around 30 models to support my Viks.

Now, after Salvage and Logistics box release I'll expand my collection with this box because those models are awesome.

After that I'll keep expanding girl-theme Viks collection which will work well with Levi too.

I collect masters, it just happens that most of the masters I own/want are Neverborn. There's at least one master from each faction that I really want to get, if not to play then just to paint up. Actually, the only faction I don't want a master from is Ten Thunders, for some reason I just don't like the look of that faction at all.

It's really hard not to collect factions to be honest!  I started out with some Masters but you end up collecting factions because you want more options (and don't want your opponents to know what you're bringing to the table).  As others have said it's often better to buy crew boxes for the minions rather than the individual minion boxes plus they often have Henchmen/Enforcers in them that are useful for all Masters.  With the dual faction Masters and stuff that can be used across factions Wyrd know what they're doing!  I've realised that I'm going to end up with a pretty heavy Guild force almost by accident (McMourning is dual, bought Dead Justice for my Ressers (and Outcast Tara), want Bound by Law for the Guards/Lawyers for McMourning, want McCabe because I collect TT and want Hoffman for the constructs for Levi.  At that point I'm already five Guild Masters in and Sonnia is the coolest Guild Master anyway so I may as well get her which only needs me needing Francisco......dammit!).

And there he is!

He's like Beetlejuice, somebody must have mentioned him twice more somewhere else!

And don't worry zFiend, I am just bringing them over to the Resser cause from the inside.  Let's be honest, the most prominent Guild members aren't even real Guild.  The Governor's Secretary is a Neverborn, the chief Coroner is a Ressurectionist.  Things just don't bold well for them!

And you are back on team Rezzer. So glad! I was worried for a minute there.

I dunno, they bold decently enough. ;)

I know what you mean about how easy it is to get caught up in a faction. With the resurgence of M2E in my FLGS, I decided I wanted Pandora since I remembered her from last edition being strong. This led in swift succession purchases of Lynch (also TT, more on that later) and Collodi since I could pick them up now that I had the opportunity to do so and likely see play time. A buddy got me Yan Lo (my first 2 ed crew technically), and since I liked Lynch I justified his purchase since I had one TT and was planning on NB anyways.

Next on the agenda is Mei Feng, since I already have Arcanist from 1st edition Malifaux and since I already have two Ten Thuders masters... XD

Guild is probably the worst faction to try and collect just masters for, because its relatively cohesive with almost every master fitting in with the Marshal theme to some extent or another.  Hoffman may be the biggest outsider in that regard.  An argument can be made for Lucius and McMourning, but those two pull so relatively little from out of faction they end up fitting in quite well.  That real trap is that McMourning doesn't pull in anything that isn't in his box set so... why not and Lucius brings in his box set a few things and play up the cohesive nature of the faction.

It's definitely easier to just collect a master if you stick to their thematic crews.  The Freikorps is a great example where a dedicated Outcast player might want to mix and match more, but I'm happy with just Von Schill and the Viks.  Ten Thunders is another faction like this, where I find myself drawn to several crews, but playing competitively means bringing Illuminated into some questionable places.  Most factions at least seem to have 1-2 masters that really do their own thing thematically I suppose.

I seem to gravitate towards Masters. I know that some of my factions will never be complete because there are just certain models that aesthetically I don't want in my collection. I started with the Viktorias in 1.5, and have been building master specific crew pools ever since. Once I accumulate enough masters and extras I wind up playing a faction (so personally my Arcanists, Outcasts and Guild see a lot of play).

For Molly, she only ever wants to play Ressers so we are working on fleshing out the entire faction so she has every option to use at all times.

Everyone does it just a little differently it seems
