  1. I have found it easier and more effective to go for a 'moonlit' style rather than total darkness when going for a night theme. If you think about what you see at night, it is not so much that everything has darker tones (since your eyes compensate for the darkness) as it is that everything is more monochrome. To achieve that I tried using dark grey/blue undertones and smooth highlights up to very light grey/blue. I used other colours too, but try to have some blue in them all so it looks as though the light source is cold. When I tried just using darker tones without this effect i found the results a bit disappointing and the detail hard to distinguish from a distance. The moonlight effect was subtle but I quite liked it. Good luck!
  2. Great, I will pass that on. Looking forward to this!
  3. Hello, a friend of mine who just got into malifaux (not on the forums) is planning on joining me at this event. Does anyone know how strict the painting restrictions are likely to be? I have only been to one M2E tournament and that was a while ago, so I have little to go on for the etiquette around painting. My friend is likely to have an unpainted crew, but will need to start practising with one of my painted ones if he can't use it!
  4. So, I promised pictures and here they are! WIP group shot WIP Toph (Mr Graves) Uncle Iroh (Proxying as Kang) Blue spirit (Lone swordsman) MoMo (Kamiatachi) Prince Zuko Group shot of painted crew including Kitara, Sokka and Aang This is my first time posting images to the forum so apologies if it doesn't work properly!
  5. Sokka as a sniper is a bit of a stretch but he does use the boomerang quite alot in the show... I figured the ranged attack could represent that, and the poison dart giving slow kind of fits in too. The sniper is also no slouch in CC. To be honest the rationale is more to do with giving my other half something ranged to play with though! We might go with the 10T brother in the end like suggested above. Just realised I misread Yu's card and he can copy Shenlongs (0) actions. I was wondering how he was supposed to get burning consistiently, but now I can see how using him with high river style might work so he's back in the running again!
  6. thanks for the advice guys! I really like ototo as Toph, had not thought of that. Graves would also work, and since they are the same size base we can use her as either! I'm not so sure about Iroh as Sensei Yu since the fluff wouldnt really add up very well (seems more like an airbender than a fire bender to me, and the high river style upgrade doesn't look like it would really complement him very well...). I think I will stick with the kids for now since i can do a pretty rounded 40ss list as follows: shenlong -Aang wandering river style - 2ss kamaitachi - Momo - 4ss Katanka snper - Sokka - 7ss monk of high river - Zuko - 6ss monk of low river - Kitara - 4ss ototo - Toph - 10ss some upgrade for ototo or shenlong - 2ss 7ss cache I'll probably order the bits for these guys this week and will post updates when I have done some conversion work.
  7. Hello, I have been trying to persuade my fiancee to join me in playing malifaux for a while now and she has agreed on one condition: I need to make her a crew featuring her favourite characters from Avatar: the last airbender. (I knew I was setting a bad precedent when i custom made Narninan army for her last year to play kings of war.. oh well, on with the next project!) Now, the most obvious master to represent this would seem to be Shenlong with all his elemental tricks (and, lets face it, fairly blatant nod to the aforementioned show). I already have some ideas on minis/profiles to use for 'team avatar': Aang - Shenlong (use Koji from busido minus the ponytail) Momo - Kamatiachi (convert one of Kojis pet monkeys) Kitara - Low river monk (use this old DnD model. The models quality makes me cringe a little, but I figure that with a decent paint job it might look passable. The pose + clothing is spot on) Sokka - Katanaka sniper (boomerang = sniper rifle?) not sure on which model to use here Zuko - high river monk maybe? or possibly kang? not sure which model to use here either Toff - ??? Sky Bison -??? maybe a dawn serpent profile? Kyoshi warriors - Orian (nice and simple one there!) Uncle iroh - Kang? i have thought about sculpting a beard onto this guy Dawn serpent - im sure there was a dragon somewhere in avatar so could probably slip this in tot he crew as is. I would be gratefull to take any advice on how the above minis might work/not work together in game and any more ideas for minis/profiles to use. I'm not shy of conversions or minor resculpt work where needed. The hardest thing in my search so far has been finding minis which look the right age (lots of adults and tiny kids out there but not many teens...) For those worried about the numebr of non Wyrd minis in here - believe me that getting my future wife into malifaux will see much more of my money heading Wyrds way over the coming years... Or at least less objection to said expenditure So, onto the presing question: Is shenlong going to be too hard for a beginner? I have not played as or aginast him myself (or any other ten thunders for that matter) but gather he is quite a finesse master, not as easy to get to grips with as some. I just want to get a feel for whether he really is that difficult. My fiancee is not shy of compexity, but I do worry about driving her away from the game if i give her a crew that is too difficult to use... Any thoughts Wyrdos?
