  1. Into the Steam (and the upcoming Core Rules) has a whole host of Gamin and Golem possibilities! Darkness, Decay, Electric, Fire, Ice, Natural, Poison, Spirit, Terror, Infected, Light, Water, and Wind. Metal is a bit unique in that the secrets of their creation are closely guarded (ala Mei Feng and Ramos really being the only people in on the secret), and the Whiskey variants aren't actually Gamin and Golems so much as constructs the Gremlins built to mimic those creatures.

  3. Recruitment Drive and Sixteen Tons were both produced for Free RPG day and are good starter One Shots that have pregen characters for you to use should you want. I also recommend Legacy of Darkness. Again it has pregen character if you like. But, really any of the one shots are pretty friendly. So, just read the little blurbs and see which one speaks to you the most.

  5. Well the big thing is that when it comes down to list building, I just don't have the points for a Warden, and I feel like something else slightly more expensive or slightly less expensive would do a better job. This is especially true in a list where you are taking advantage of the Emissary for added mobility. Emissary, Judge, Effigy, and Guardian / Franc are expensive and after paying for those you don't have a ton of points to spare for the Warden. As a general combat model I would rather have the more independent Hunter for a ss more, as a Scheme Runner I would rather have an Orderly who also benefits from inspired is significantly faster for running schemes, and can occasionally heal Justice. If you want a Witchling Stalker to dispel magic and remove conditions on Justice or others, that puts an even higher premium on your available points. And then you might want a Field Reporter who while doesn't directly synergize with Justice is an excellent cheap activation, scheme runner, and counter schemer- and the reporter can document the triumphs of our Lady. What it comes down to is I don't feel the Warden offers anything special to a Justice crew, its not that he is terrible, he just doesn't make the cut for other models that I feel my lists need more. I like my Warden, don't get me wrong, and I field it often in Guardsmen Lucius and in McCabe crews. He just needs a little something extra to compete. Whether that is Dashel giving him + flips to shoot and (0) focus or adding a second Ram to the Glowing Saber's attack making him possibly the best wielder of that artifact (or at least most cost effective because the Pale Rider can be hilarious in later turns). Basically he just needs a little extra that isn't found in Justice's crew to be a competitive choice. Competing with a Pathfinder or Austringer is a tough bracket.

  6. I can't remember the last time I played a game where my opponent didn't have armor, hard to kill or triggers like end attacker activation/squeal on at least two models. Most factions can bring models with really annoying armor values or insane defensive triggers. If I was up against ressers I could run into armour 4 Izamu or immortal masters like Kirai or Molly as well as Molly summoning in a crapton of hard to kill models at two wounds. In arcanists there's armor aplenty and the likes of Colette, Marcus and Rasputina. Against those kinds of models that high min damage will do next to nothing so I would prefer to have one model with high min damage and also Joss to handle the tricky models you're bound to run into. Ignoring all those defenses is a lot better than one extra point of damage on another model in my eyes and 3 isn't pitiful min damage, witchling thralls are considered fairly good beaters and they have min damage 3 but don't ignore any of the above defenses. I wouldn't dare to try for an assassinate-like scheme without a way to ignore triggers and armour on at least some model in my crew. Joss also has pretty great interactions with Hoffman: just the combination of overload (the reactivate thing) in a list that can deal damage to make a model take an ap and get fast and easy access to healing - yes please! Keep him near the emissary or heal him with Hoffman after you ping him for damage and you can keep him at healthy wounds but reactivate him, possibly for several turns in a row With flips on all his attacks that might start to add up.

  7. Honestly when I think about Arcanist beaters, the one that comes to my mind is Joss. Sure, Langston is a bit sexier, and if Frame for Murder is in the pool (and it will be frequently) one of the Enforcers will likely be a better pick. Joss is probably the most durable pick Hoffman can field, he has hard to kill which can help him hold on in a situation where another melee beatstick might falter, and if he can hold on at that 1 wound level, he'll pick up reactivate. Being able to stone for damage prevention can also give him a bit more flexibility in terms of surviving than a Peacekeeper. He has a very flat line melee attack which doesn't care about triggers, or damage flip- making him just as deadly with Machine Puppet attacks as his own. He can generate additional scrap which Hoffman can use to Heal or upgrade or even just blow up. The fact that his attacks ignore just about everything is icing on the cake. As a Henchmen he can carry both Numb to the World and Debt to the Guild, which makes him significantly more dangerous. (and still the same price as a peackeeper with Numb, or cheaper than Howard with Numb). He is especially comfortable being near the Brutal Emissary who with a low tome can set up a healing aura for friendlies activating near him- which means reactivating him will heal him back up to 3 wounds just for being near the emissary, with possible additional healing from Hoffman. Scrap from killing living models, and a smaller base to help him get into position. The Emissary can also borrow his arc axe, which will give people a headache for sure. The flips are gravy too. I would consider the 40mm henchmen for the same role as the 50mm enforcer beatsticks in a Hoffman crew. Especially one that includes the Emissary. Ryle and Joss both make excellent beat sticks in a Hoffman crew. Between the Emissary and your Henchmen, you really don't need another big monster, and it would probably just get in the way. You could use those points instead on fielding somebody like Sidir who can give anybody with a modification free flips, and occasionally shoot his gun or try to hand out slow. Sidir is also especially nice because By Your Side can be used to avert a deathblow to one of your constructs and make them hit Sidir instead. Joss is at 1 wound and just gained reactivate, opponent has one more attack... BY YOUR SIDE.

  8. If you check Malistrad's list here: Link the adventures with pregenerated characters are noted with an asterisk. Generally speaking, the adventures with pregen characters tend to be good jumping-off points, as those are the ones I write for conventions like Origins and GenCons.

  9. You quoted me, I compelled to reply because that, but I am completely at a loss because you don't seem to a functioning notion of intent for movement. The game has premeasuring. Your models can't accidentally move of their free will. That means you know both how far your model can move, where you want to move, and whether that will or will not leave engagement with the models that it started with. How does that result in uncertainty for you?

  10. There are buildings with missing walls that would allow people to change levels. There are also Floors with trap doors so the question could be in a perfectly legitimate setting, and not just a abuse the rules situation. The rule is fairly clear. If you are making a walk action to leave the engagement range, then they get to make a disengaging strike. If you are changing ht by 2 against a model with a 2" engagement range, then as long as you end the walk with your base overlapping their base, and you never had to leave the 2" engagement range, you are fine to do it. If, for example, you have to fly around a ceiling then for a period of time you are outside their 2" engagement and even though you end back in it, you would be subject to a disengaging strike.

  11. To much time has passed without posting my progress. I'll correct that piece by piece and show off the things I've done. First some finished Trees for the city-boards. I've thought about different ways to put some leafs onto them, but I somehow did not find a satisfying technique. All I've "leafs" tried kept falling of my test-tree. So I decided some old dead trees will fit into the malifaux-setting just fine. Next a few more parts of Greebos bought terrain, I've painted. Came out quite nice. The Squatter's Rights Marker got a little bit more paint and some Grass. in the top left you can see my first snow experiments (which contain some tragic episodes). I'll talk more about them in my next post.

  16. I painted: Lady Justice (15ss?). Scales of Justice (3ss?). Brutal effigy (4ss). Wendigo victim (team painted with a friend. He did the Wendigo. Call it 1.5 ss). The total should be 23.5 soulstones.

  17. I think you may actually mean the Mechanical Attendant? Also, more on the matter - you are right that the Metal gamin and Mobile Toolkit are not Hoffmans totems as per rules definition, but they do fulfill some of the roles a good totem should and are in a comparable price class, so it`s only natural that people consider them as totem. After all, you could always use the the stones for something different, no need to buy several "totems" just because you can^^
    2 points
  18. It isn't a totem you know so I can use it regardless of using one of the actual totems. No matter which totem I choose there is a high probability of me including both a gamin and toolkit, I just need to find a suitable proxy for the gamin. Bits of sprue and lizardmen have come up as suggestions I'm not really sure what makes a metal gamin distinct, the sculpts look noting like each other so it's hard to know whaqt to take into my conversion. Edit: I guess a rail gamin to match a hypothetical future rail golem. Barrels as legs, couple of smoke stacks on the back and a grille for a face should be doable.

  20. Thanks, the board plays really nice (although it was a one-timer so far). Of course, the canal on one side, hinders some movement and there are a lot of alleyways, but neither my buddy and me play Seamus ;-) It was a fun game :-)

  21. Here is a calendar for Mid-Atlantic Malifaux Events. Mid-Atlantic Henchman Calendar It covers the following states. Delaware Maryland Pennsylvania Virginia West Virginia We want to grow Wyrd in the region, and to let people know about events in a convenient amount of drive time. If you're a Henchman and/or TO in the region, and want access to promote your events, pm me here so I can add you to the list of contributors.

  22. So I may have started assembling Hoffman since I have all the guild constructs already built and painted. I'm looking at the attendant and I'm thinking that the automatic power loop is nice since it guarantees the loop df 5 even if I don't bother to loop something better in and the blasty stuff may come in handy. All around it looks like a decent model for the stones that seems to require very little active effort on my part. It also fits well as a slow target. My big question is really: what the hell is relay information supposed to do? Hoffman's big drawback seems to be low range, not lacking LoS. He hardly ever attacks stuff from what I've gathered, he mostly buffs his big pals... Anyone come up with a good use for that ability? The child can do the perma loop thing but at a pretty hefty cost. I would be reluctant to keep that up though the game and it feels wrong for Hoffman of all people to routinely kill innocent children whose only crime was wanting to be just like him... The governor's proxy... Sigh... If anyone can get me even slightly interested in bringing that waste of our faction totem space I would be in eternal grattitude!

  23. Not all. I think there is a list somewhere of which do and which don't but, I will dig through the pdf's tomorrow and make one and save it somewhere I can find it easy as it is a question that comes up frequently.

  24. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Avatar's useless wings. Hoffman seems more practical than that. I'm going to remove them from mine, which just shipped this morning. Landed a great deal on ebay for it too.

  25. If you're going pure Guild, which is much more viable with the Emissary, I'd take the Attendant every time. He's just so easily replaced with the metal Gamin and Arcanist Assets has that great heal on its card which is pretty integral for my Hoff play. Paying five stones total for Ca8 and healing is worth it every time. Plus Howard with Armor+2 and Numb to the World...hard to pass up.

  26. Thanks for all of the replies. Lots of things to think about. I should have clarified a bit more. I could use Lady J against brand new players with a straight forward crew. My other thought was to use her as a master who is a bit less powerful against newer players who have been playing for a while but are still getting to grips with some of the nuances of the game. I mostly play McMourning for guild and was thinking of something a bit more straight forward to play against.

  27. But the surprise on people's faces when Hoffman is outactivating them makes it worthwhile! I don't like to play the effigy as the armor and O.S.A. sink (for no good reason--it's well built for the role), so I have mostly settled into taking mechanical attendant as the totem in a pure Guild crew and/or if I suspect hunting party. The child tends to be fielded with Arcanist Assets cheap construct back-up since she is unreliable.* *even more so these days, as one of my opponents has made a point of planting a headshot in her skull the last X games we've played

  33. His personal totem is probably the best option. It's 2ss to keep him fast the whole game and pad your activations (which you will need).
    1 point
  34. Alpha striking with Justice seems kinda excessive against someone just learning the game. You could use the emissary but skip that particular trick. I would probably skip Francisco too.

  35. Issue command to cause a Hound to (1) charge with focus. That should suprise someone, especially if the Hound ends up in the Elite Training . Woof Speaking of that, If you take an Executioner you could Commanding Presence it to discard it's Ready to Work upgrade and charge. An out of activation Executioner charge could take anyone by suprise. Too bad Thrall are a thing and benefit so much more from Lucius' abilities for the same price tag.

  36. I have no insider knowledge but I do have food for thought: A. This year's certificates for 1-3 in Malifaux events all feature Puppet Wars art. B. In the "Welcome Kyle" announcement the is something that looks Puppet Wars-like in the lower left of the photo. I've never played Puppet Wars but I'd definitely buy it if it starts to get support.

  37. You can't move through floors without incorporeal because the building should have the enclosed trait. Also: if you intend to land at the floor above or below you are trying to leave their engagement range I believe. Even if you were allowed to move through floors like with incorporeal the intent to move to another floor will provoke a disengaging strike.

  38. So it depends on if you need lots of activations or not based on schemes, but I typically run one of these 2 lists for McCabe more often then not (I change a couple models here and there for specific scheme pools) List 1 Core: Kill em All This list is designed to hit hard and fast and deal with scheming after the opponent is crippled. (1) McCabe - ??ss +Badge of Speed - 2ss +Glowing Saber - 2ss +Promises - 1ss (2) Kamaitachi - 4ss (3) Yasunori - 12ss +Smoke Grenades - 1ss (4) Warden - 6ss (5) Warden - 6ss (6) Terracotta Warrior - 5ss Then last 11ss you can fill with whatever else you think you'll need for schemes. List 2 Core: Activation Spam This list is designed for heavy interacting pools and to out activate most opponents. (1) McCabe - ??ss +Badge of Speed - 2ss +Glowing Saber - 2ss +Promises - 1ss (2) Luna - 4ss (3) Warden - 6ss (4) Terracotta Warrior - 5ss (5) Guild Hound - 3ss (6) Guild Hound - 3ss (7) Guild Hound - 3ss Then you have 21ss to spend on some mid-ranged or bigger models for the list.

  40. I took stompybot back. He took it back that night. This morning it reappeared on my painting station, now base coated. Hoffman wants to O.S.A. copy either emissary's native 0 action (...which may lead to two overlapping auras of 'heal 2'? Hmmm...) or his conflux's 0 action to drop a scrap (which means he can at last produce two scrap per activation, for a 0 and a 1ap; I'm sure we all see the potential of getting nimble and armor out on turn 1 for a pleasant change).

  41. @JDAntoine look what a friend brought me yesterday from the Northern Hemisphere: I just need to paint it and print your card now.

  42. There is a lore explanation for that. In Hoff's fluff piece about becoming his Avatar he was hit by the abundant ambient magical energy and transformed into the big stompy bot by amalgamating (see what I did?) a bunch of railroad steel and broken machinery while fighting some other big, mechanical monstrosity. He has an introspective moment of seeing his unconscious body lying on the ground and needs to protect his "useless self" from harm, thus the baby hold. Hoffman's spirit/magic created the avatar spontaneously, he didn't work on it in a shop or anything so he used whatever was around at the time. I believe this was in Twisting Fates? Not 100% sure on that one. Nightmare Hoffman box with Hoff in a better looking Hannah-type suit would be pretty cool too.

  43. It's pure epicness in my opinion, for the Hoffman.
