Fixed Pool selection

I’m considering attending an event in a couple of weeks that is based on a limited pool.

Now whilst this event is set up in a way to make it seem a beginners event, it is probably one of the most challenging ways to play tournament Malifaux. You need to plan for all sorts of eventualities before you even see the venue tables.

This event is fixed master which sort of makes it easier, but also can make it harder for some masters.

There are probably a few sorts of Malifaux players, and their approach to crew building will affect how the approach this sort of event.

1 sort plays with a virtually fixed list, or at least a core of models, and only change a few things to what they know. This is the sort of player that most people start as (due to only owning a few models), and some stay as. If It works for you, then its all well and good (The Current UKGT holder is this sort of player, and will play a virtually fixed list regardless).

If this is you, then you probably don’t really need to read this Blog, as making a pool is quite easy for you.

The Other sort or player makes use of a much wider range of models, mixing and matching for what they want at a particular time.

That’s the sort of Player I am.

I used  only 1 master more than once in the recent UK GT (7 rounds). It was Marcus, and my first list (Stake a claim) looked like this

Marcus, Spawn mother, Blessed of December, Cerberus, 2 Gupps, 2 Silurids, Jackolope.

My second looked like this (reckoning).

Marcus, War pig, Rogue necromancy, Dawn serpent, Gupps, Decembers Acolyte and Jackolope.

Whilst they both worked, they are quite extreme styles of lists, filled with very specialist models that would only work in a small niche.

So I now need to create a 70 ss pool to play 3 45 ss games. It’ll be using the new 2016 schemes, which I haven’t even tried yet.

Its Fixed Master, so That’s where I need to start.

I considered Ironsides, as I haven’t yet got my head around her properly yet, but with such a limited pool I am worried that not understanding what she wants, I might completely handicap myself before I even start. I then considered Marcus. I do well with Marcus, but part of that is a huge hiring pool that I enjoy making use of. And it is nominally a beginners event.

So I have decided to Go Jack Daw.

I’ve managed a few games with him, and enjoy his style, but there is a lot for me to learn.

Last time I used him, I had a lot of fun with Out of Control Desolation engines (8 AP on the first turn), but I’m not sure that what I need to get that list to work will do for all strategies.

My general approach is to build lists and look for common ground. Make my lists for a range of games, and then work out why I have what I have in the list.

I own every outcast model released except Killjoy. I own every out of faction Merc except Gracie. I own Every Tormented model except Papa Loco, Jakuna Ubumi and Drowned (which I do sort of own a proxy for).

So I’m going to make 3 lists.

I know my Strategies, but not my scheme pools for the games. (Or the table or the opponent).

Interference (Standard deployment)

Squatters Rights (Corner)

Head Hunter (Standard)

So I’m going to add the following Scheme pools and make my Lists based on a generic standard western town table. (There will be some terrain, but nothing specific to work with or around)

Convict Labor, Exhaust their forces, Hunting Party, Set up, Search the ruins

Convict Labor, Show of force, Hunting party, Mark for death, Occupy their turf

Convict Labor, Take prisoner, leave your mark, Catch and release, Detonate the charges

Interference (Standard deployment) Convict Labor, Exhaust their forces, Hunting Party, Set up, Search the ruins

Jack Daw (Twist and Turn, Writhing Torment, 3 curses) (4ss)

Lust (8)

Guilty (5)

Bishop, Oath Keeper(11)

Johan, Oath Keeper(7)

Obedient Wretch (4)

Hodgepodge Effigy (4)

Justification

The Wretch is Cheap, and can summon Rats to help out numbers and deny interference. The Hodgepodge is cheap and solid stats. Lust can drastically ruin a careful position. Guilty are cheap, and can make a beater Tormented. Johan has a decent Ml Range for tying up multiple models. He can also put out the hurt.

Bishop is a toolbox, capable of ignoring almost any defence. He is great engaged, and 3 AP is always good.

I should be in a good spot to do Hunting party and Possibly exhaust their forces. I also should be in an ok spot to deny exhaust. I can probably get Convict Labor with not too much effort.  I don’t think anyone is likely to take search the ruins, because of its interaction with not scoring Interference. Set up is probably not going to happen either.

Squatters Rights

Convict Labor, Show of force, Hunting party, Mark for death, Occupy their turf.

Jack Daw (Twist and Turn, Writhing Torment, 3 curses) (4)

Ashes and Dust (Scramble) (15)

Bishop (10)

Guilty (5)

Nurse (5)

Rat catcher (6)

Rat catcher has don’t mind me, useful for stealing Squatters markers.

Nurse and Bishop combo can get me an edge marker on the first turn. (Nurse Gives Bishop +2 walk. Guilty makes him tormented, and so he gets a push, and Jack can make him take an extra action.

Plan of getting an edge easily, and then working into the center. I would probably go for Convict Labor and Hunting party, although Mark for death might match hunting party well.

Ashes and dust can either help threaten the middle by  a huge threat range (and the possibility of getting Tormented from Jack) or go on the other flank to Bishop and nibble along there. Some of this may depenmd on how much I think they are going for show of force. I might need to check my distances for Corner deployment,

Head hunter

Convict Labor, Take prisoner, leave your mark, Catch and release, Detonate the charges

Jack Daw (Twist and Turn, Writhing Torment, 3 curses) (4)

Ashes and dust(13)

Hodegpodge (4)

Johan  (Oathkeeper) (7)

Strongarm suit (Oathkeeper) (11)

Guilty (5)

I would be tempted with Take Prisoner, depending on opponents crew, Otherwise its probably Convict Labor and Catch and release.

Ashes and Dust is hard hitting, and capable of killing something and collecting a head from it.

Johan hits hard and is good area Control.

The Strongarm suit can be handy with its ability to charge out of Combat to pick the right targets each turn.

Guilty and Hodgepodge are there as cheap activations that are going to aim to be the ones to grab heads that the bigger guys kill.

I have 3 generic lists. If I combine them I end up with

Jack Daw

Ashes and dust (13)

Johan   (6)

Bishop (10)

Strong-arm suit (10)

Guilty (5)

Nurse (5)

Rat catcher (6)

Lust (8)

Obedient Wretch (4)

Hodgepodge Effigy (4)

Upgrades

Writhing tourment (2)

Twist and Turn (2)

The 3 cursed upgrades (0)

Scramble (2)

OathKeeper *2 (2)

Total 79 soulstones.

Breaking the pool up

Upgrades – This is potentially a little light for the new scheme. I like that Jack load out, and Scramble is one that whilst I often ignore, can star on certain boards. 2 oath keepers is probably a good amount. At the moment I don’t think I want any others upgrades for what I currently have in the pool.

Hitter models

Ashes and Dust, Bishop, Strongarm suit, Johan.  (39 points)

I’m relatively low on ranged hitting power which might be a worry on open boards. Also I don’t see/use Jack Daw as a strong hitter. So I need to make sure I have access to a decent choice of these to cover my masters weaknesses.

To a large extent Bishop and the Strong arm do similar stuff. I might look at adding someone like Lazarus or Rusty Alyce into the pool to give a little more in the way of options. I am probably going to Drop Ashes and Dust, as it is supposed to be a beginners friendly event, and Ashes is not a beginners friendly problem to solve.

Support Models

Lust, Nurse, Guilty. (18)

I think with my set up I will want to make at least 1 model tormented, I’ll stick with the guilty. I like the mobility tricks with Lust, and the Nurse is pretty solid.

Not sure of any other support models I might be looking for.

Schemers

Rat catcher, Obdient Waif, Hodgepodge. (14)

I might drop the rat catcher, as careful use of the waif will allow me to summon a rat catcher on turn 2.

Other models I might consider

I’ve mentioned Rusty and Lazarus. Envy, Greed and Sloth are possible band members to bring along. I had cunning plans when I started to combine Lust with a crooked man and Shafted. And If I need to up my scheme running, then Desperate merc and Void wretch can both do well for only 4 stones.

Pool B

Jack

Rusty (10)

Bishop (10)

Sloth (8)

Lust (8)

Johan (6)

Nurse (5)

Crooked Man (5)

Guilty (5)

Obidient Wretch (4)

Hodgepodge Effigy (4)

Twist and Turn (2)

Writhing Torment (2)

Scramble (2)

Oathkeeper*2 (2)

Puts me at 73 still.

So for the purpose of this article I am going to drop the Nurse and pick up Tally sheet (which is a solid upgrade with a Killy henchman like Alyce).

I’ve still got a week to go before the event, so I may well change the pool before hand. (So anyone going to lost love and seeing something different, tough ;)) I've ended up fairly different to how I expected to, when I started this a week ago.

I will write a follow up post with post game reports and what did and didn’t work.

please comment and ask questions, and tell me where I've gone wrong.

Week 2

Our Gremlin player shows up, and so we have a 5th player.

The event this week is Sandstorms, which force Blind deployment, and at the cost of discarding a card, you get to make all the board severe, and get 2 script for killing a model.

The first thing we have to do at the beginning of a week, is buy a new model. I select a rail worker, as I normally don’t find much use for them, and so don’t select them.  Should give him a decent run in the campaign to show to me what he is really worth.

I watch the first game, Hannah, against Bad juju, and see how this event is nearly ideal for Juju.  Waldgiest are unimpeded, and the event gives them a permanent ml range of 4. They do well, but the game is a blood bath.

After that I face Hannah. She has 2 trappers, Johan, a Liberian and the hodgepodge effigy. We are playing turf war. I am down my Ronin, so a small game in which I pretty much have to pick everything in my Arsenal.

We have entourage, distract, protect territory and Assassinate. I hate assassinate when I have to take Myranda. For anyone reading this blog and thinking of making a Shifting Loyalty crew, remember that if you do pick Myranda, then about half the games she either is not going to be able to shapeshift, or she will give up points.

We get to deploy, and if you haven’t every tried blind deployment, I really recommend it for fun. You place cards where you want a model to deploy, and then after they are all placed you turn them over to find out which side is going to deploy there.

After deployment, Hannah had 4 models in the turf war area. I had 1 nearby. I also had a model pretty much in each corner. I had tried protect territory and distract. After seeing my deployment I probably should have picked entourage Myranda. Turn one saw my rail worker killed by Johan. My spider was able to charge the librarian, but missed with both attacks. My trapper nearly killed the hodgepodge, but then got engaged by Hannah. I managed to score a turf point on turn 2 because Johan black jokered his damage flip against Myranda when he had the knockback trigger.

The rest of the game was a one sided march to victory from Hannah (9-1, he only scored 2 VP from assassinate), with me unable to do anything to him really. I walked away from the game with a mannequin that wanders off. And the Sabotage bounty.

There was time in this week for me to get a second game, and I went up against Juju again.

It was squatters rights, which might be tricky if deployment doesn’t go my way, as I have nothing unimpeded, and he does. But finally assassinate isn’t on the table! We have Vendetta, distract Breakthrough and cursed object

I pick Vendetta – Trapper on Illuminated, and Breakthrough. I get a much better luck on the deployment, with an even spread across the board for both of us.

Trapper takes a shot on the illuminated, to get me a start on my vendetta, and thanks to the red joker, I have 3 VP. I set my rail worker up in the back of his deployment zone, and try and drop markers. The Mysterious effigy is the only thing nearby that can stop me.  Over the course of a few turns, I get some markers down, and put some damage on the mysterious effigy, who manages to get me to my hard to kill and with poison, so when I activate, I die. (or at the end of turn, which ever happens first).

Myranda manages to get 2 squat markers tagged by going fast on the second turn, and juju and a waldigist get two for him. My ronin and my spider are busy trying to deny breakthrough points by killing waldgiests. And they aren’t doing too badly at it, but 1 lives long enough to get him some points. Juju heads off after Myranda, and by the end of the game, she has had to shapeshift (to a blessed) to survive. I also manage to get juju buried, but not in time to get across to remove any of his squat markers. (I could have summoned a blessed Earlier, but would have given up 3 points for assasinate, as opposed to 2 or 0, but I might have been able to deny squat markers, for my sabotage). I end up on a 8-7 win, as I only get 1 break through marker I get 2 barter flips here, and one of them is a Gatling gun! Having a quick look at my crew, I see the swarm ability that gives them positive damage flips is any attack.  I also buy them a change of station to enforcer to let them carry the gun. My railworker becomes accident prone (automatically finished off).  At this point, I’m fairly happy with how the crew is doing.

I have an overall campaign rating of 0 (2 campaign upgrades, and 2 injuries), meaning that I generally get extra script from who ever I play. The absence of non minions in the list has drastically reduced me looking for equipment, and I haven’t seen skills I want for anyone. (plus until that last game I was script poor).

My Campaign crew - Week 1

I’m going to do a brief series of posts on my Campaign crew. Some of this is quite old, and the campaign isn’t finished so I don’t know when I will finish them.

We are taking part in Nytheria as well, so we are using their stronghold bonus and events. The campaign is due to last 6 game weeks, but that may be more real weeks

Week 1.

4 players showed up. We had Wrath, hoping to get the whole band eventually,  Bad juju, Hannah and then myself.

I’ve signed up as an arcanist (you can probably see the tab next to my forum name). So which of the awesome arcanist henchmen do I want to use? Well, if you’ve looked at any other of my blog posts, you’ll know I’m trying to use everything I own this year. And careful reading of the finishing off rules, leads me to decide that Myranda is the best choice for me because she can shapeshift into another model (letting my cross multiple models off my list despite being forced into a fixed crew for several weeks).

This has also affected my starting crew is a couple of other ways. I’ve tried to pick models that I need to use multiple of, and because of her shapshifting into other beasts, I’ve not actually picked them. (I know, Myranda has so many things on her cards that make beasts better, and I’m ignoring all of them!). I have picked imbued energies though so all is not lost.

The rest of the list is an arachnid swarm, a manniquin, a ronin, a Friekorps Trapper. All models I have multiple of to use. It’s a strange mix of models with a large lack of synergy. Oh well, we wil have to see how it goes…

My First game is against Juju. This week the event has convict gunslingers showing up, with extra script for killing them. Juju has a list with 3 waldigiests and an illuminated, with eternal fiend for juju.

It’s a reconnoitre game, which is very hard when our lists are so small. And one of the schemes is assasinate. Just in case you didn’t realise, that’s a scheme that is virtually impossible to score against his list, and one that I can easily give him the points for by taking my (0) action.  (there is also make them suffer – not good for me, cursed object and protect territory).

Somehow, Myranda survives the onslaught from Juju for a few turns. A couple of bad placements cost me a reconnoitre point, but I get cursed object going well, and schemes down for protect territory.  I am able to deny the waldigiest much success with the constantly re-positioning trapper, and the anti armour ronin holds its own. I end up having to shapeshift Myranda into a cerberus when she is nearly dead, which manages to remove juju from the board.  Some how I scrape a 6-5 win.

My Ronin got knocked out, and the refs decide that for her safety we have to assess for concussion, and so she isn’t allowed on the field fir the next game. I do find a helmet, which I snap up to allow Myranda to have Hard to kill.

Half way there,

6 Month update

Well, here I am, 6 months into the challenge. Its going pretty well on the whole.

My Current collection is 1962ss, 414 models.

I’ve played 30 games and that has used 57% of my collection.

My CMON/Micro art bases arrived last week, so I can finally get around to basing the last few models I need to base, meaning Dreamer, Kirai and the Gremlin Faction become playable soon. (well for a given degree of playable)

So a look at the numbers

Collection of 414 models (47 Masters) totalling 1962 ss

I’ve still got to use 197 models (24 masters) totalling 842 ss

Arcanist:- From my 101 models (15 masters) at 464ss, I’ve got 77 models (13 masters) at 364ss to go

Guild:- 62 models (9 Masters) at 279ss, 19 models (3 masters) at 82ss to go

Ressers:- 73 Models (8 Masters) at 296ss, 20 models (3 masters) at 72ss to go

Neverborn 74 models (9 masters) at 355ss, 22 models (2 masters) at 69ss to go

Outcast 75 models (8 masters) at 317 ss, 17 models (2 masters) at 69 ss to go

Ten thunders:-56 models (7 Masters) at 261ss, 23 Models (2 masters) at 113 ss to go

Gremlin:-21 models (3 masters) at 86 ss, 18 models (2 masters) at 74ss to go

I have deliberately left the Arcanist faction so far, since I know I’ve got 2 2day tournements to go to that I want to do well at, and the plan has always been to play Arcanists at them. (5 round and 7 round)

Guild is left with Sonnia, Lucius and McCabe, because in the game I played with him, he didn’t dismount, so I have got to get him off the horse. I’ve got to use 3 lawyers and 3 guild guard still.

Resurectionists have Kirai, and a lot of her crew to go, so its possible I’d use most of what I have left in 1 game with her. I also have 2 Seamus games to get in.

Neverborn Have Dreamer and Lucius. The 2 young Nephlim are probably the hardest to fit in to a list, (Having failed to grow any tots when I tried) but I can probably knock most of the list off when I play Dreamer if I go for the summoning upgrade.

Outcast have Misaki and Leveticus to go. I’ve left Leveticus till near the end as he is a good one for picking up odds and ends for his lists.

Ten thunders have Misaki and McCabe. Minion wise they are probably going to be one of the strangest to finish. I’ve got 3 Oiran and 3 Torkage to go, as well as 2 archers and 2 Ten thunders Brothers. I expect Misaki will be used here picking up a lot of those.

Gremlins have Wong and Sommer, and once I’ve based my figures, I’ll probably get a Sommer game and remove a decent amount of the list in 1 go.

When I put it that way, it doesn’t sound like a lot left. Maybe I can afford to buy more stuff.

I’ve not bought a huge amount this year so far, but that is more due to them not releasing things I don’t have. I’m waiting for Ironsides to hit my local shop, and will be picking up at least the Dark Carnival at Gencon. (Plus most of Shifting loyalties, the 2 player starter set, and I’m sure there is other things that will tempt me. I want to do the 3 headed list with Sow, Rogue necromancy and as many Cerberus as I can fit in, so I’ll need a sow…)

Hobbywise I’ve managed to paint a lot of my figures, to at least a block colour stage. Not well enough to count as finished but painted well enough to play with.

I haven’t done much on Board building (but have bought a 3” square rubber mat, and 18 1foot square terrain tiles, so I should hopefully have something sorted.

In my first 2 tournaments of the year I did pretty well, 2nd in Dover whilst being Undefeated, and then second in the taelorn doubles, but last month I went to the Summer showdown and did rubbish (by my standards). I lost 3 and won 1. And it was with Neverborn, who I have done fine with before. It might be that the playing everything has dulled my edge. (or the Curse of the Marshall)

Over all I’ve won 12 out of the 30 games (3 of the loses were in 3 way games). I probably would have won nearer 20 normally, but would have used a much smaller pool of models.

Report wise, Work has got hectic, and most of my report writing is normally in the morning whilst I’m avoiding going into the Lab because other people aren’t here yet, so its fallen by the wayside.

I hope to get more reports written up, and some discussion on some of the figures.

Adran

Hmm, its already June and I haven’t updated in 2 months. Again.

Work has been busier that I expected, and I’ve not been writing up all my games properly, so I haven’t felt like I had anything to post.

But I have still been playing.

Since the last Update I’ve Played Joes Kirai list twice, once with Nicodem, and once with Mei Feng. And I proved Mei is twice as good as Nicodem. 9I lost 10-1 with Nico. I lost 10-2 with Mei).

So other than learning I don’t know how to beat Joe with Kirai, what else did I learn?

Using the vuilture to summon from all over the board is pretty good. Putting the Vulture within Izamu’s threat range is not good when that is your plan.

Mei almost ripped apart the Kiari bubble, but losing initiative, and then Datsuba managing to get 2 moderate damage results on negative flips 2 attacks in a row, whilst I only got weak on damage prevention finished of Mei before she could take apart the list. Kang with Thunder archers and samurai worked fairly nicely, but not enough to shrink the crew below its starting size.

I used a Lucius Crew against Sonnia, and suffered a slight loss.

I used Jacob Lynch against Levi, and lost. Mainly due to my own stupidity. Rusty Alyce burn out 2 necropunks, and I used Tuco to kill one. Levi managed to kill Tuco in return. I managed to get Hundering darkness to “obey” alyce, and instead of shootinmg at the necorpunk still on 1 wound I shot at a waif and failed to kill it. To make matters worse, that necropunk was the frame for murder Target, so I’d have been in a great place. Hungvering Darkness took a 4 ap turn from levi and survived. And when huggy took his turn did enough to Johan to heal up signifigantly, and get Johan down to hard to kill, and not having the cards in hand to pass the fear given form test I would force on him, he couldn’t risk activating him next.

Alas the necropunk ran off and dropped some claim markers in my half, and along with Ashes and dust manged to out claim me. I did forget about Cursed object until turn 3, and fior turns 4 and 5 there was literally only 1 abomination on the table that I could have put it on, and he kept running away from all my models. (I hadn’t realised beckoners couldn’t cause disengaging strikes until the abomination just walked away and around a corner. )

And I’ve just used the Viks to takle on a McMorning crew in which I showed why you want to resolve the poison condition on models before you remove the welcome to malifaux from Taelor.

This was a 9-3 win. Although I almost didn’t Assasinate McMorning. I did chargewith both Viks under Sisters in Fury. And they both survived for me to win initiative again next turn and finally kill the good doctor.

One thing I have noticed is when I enter my model usage into my spreadsheet, the percentage used barely seems to go up and its quite discouraging. Probably not helped by several of my early games involved summoning, which gets lots of models used.

I have a 4 round 50 ss tournement in a weeks’ time, which will probably involve Neverborn. As long as I don’t duplicate much I should finally cross the halfway point of the task.

I own 1962 ss. I still have 1128 ss to use. I’ve had 23 games to date this year. I have 28 master models to go. (that Includes 12 Arcanist Masters, even if I don’t buy the trouble shooters box!).

I’ve Barely touched Arcanists this year (deliberately, I’m saving them for the GT), so they still have 405 SS to use.

Guild, Gremlins and Resurrectionist are waiting for CMON bases and Painting, but once those bases arrive will hopefully be finished off in 8 or so games. (except for the War Rabbit which is almost certainly going to get used with Marcus and the jackalope to really make people fear the bunnies!)

I will update in early July, to give a 6 month summery (although this is pretty close).

Adran

Ooops.

Argh! I’ve not been able to update this for nearly 2 months.

I have played some games in that time. I have started to write some battle reports for them, but not yet finished them. As I find time I will try and write more and add them here.

Games I’ve played but not written about

Hoffman (Howard, Metal Gamin, Guardian, Witchling, Mecanical attendant, Warden, Watcher) A 3 way Vs Tara and Sonnia in a loot game (I was the middle player, and Lost).

Pandora (Poltigiest, Teddy, Illuminated, Candy Coppelius) ina 3 way loot game (I was in the middle) Vs Kirai and Tara. I lost

Hoffman (peacekeeper, Mechanical Attendent, Exocutioner, guardian, watcher, metal Gamin, Death Marshal) Vs Kirai in Reconnotre. I lost

Hamilin (Kade, Nix, Specialist, Wretch, Stolen and 3 rats and a catcher Vs Viks in Extraction. (Plus at leats 2 more stolem, 15 more rats, 2 more catchers and 2 rat kings so good for percetages) I lost, but those Viks really hate Rats. They got 5 Red Joker damage flips in the game, and they were all against Rast. They also Red Jokered a Df flip against a rat.

Molly Vs Tara in Interference (25 SS game) Using Rafkin, Belle, Crooked man and a canine remains. + 5 mindless zombies, 4 belles and 4 doxies. I lost, but summoners really get theough my pool. This was practise for a doubles Tournement against my partner –CrikeyMiles, Or Mike as I normally call him.

3 doubles games when I used Molly alongside the following Tara List (Tara, Karina, Toshiro, Yin)

First was Turf war Vs Viks and Colette I used Dead Doxy, Punk Zombie, Crooked man and a nurse for a win

Second was Interference Vs McCabe and Yan lo and I took Shikome, Nurse, Chaiki and a cruligan. Kang supporting a gun line of 2 riflemen, an Austringer and a Katanaka sniper, and beign healed by Yan lo is pretty tough to crack. 7-6 win (earnt by pretty much the last move of the last turn to engage Yan lo to deny him an interference point that turn)

Third was Reckoning with Rogue Necromancy, grave spirit, Dead Doxy, Cruligan. Lost to Guilds Mc Brothers as Mcmorning and McCabe took us apart 3-0. (they got a frame for murder, and 1 reckoning point. We killed McMorning all game).

So I’m a little past the quarter stage of the year.

According to my spread sheet I currently own 1951 ss of Models. That’s across 422 models, of which I own 46 Master models (Looking at it I have 15 Arcanist Master models! And that isn’t including the Avatar models)

I still have 1304 ss to use and 35 master Figures (Typically, whilst I’ve duplicated 3 masters so far this year, they were masters I only had 1 copy of).

I have played a total of 33% of my models.

I have played 17 games.

I have 408ss of Arcanist models to play

75 ss gremlins

144ss Guild

317 Neverborn

130 Outcast

107 Resurectionist

123 Ten thunders

(obviously there is some duel faction, but I’ve only included it in whichever Faction I counted first).

Approxamatly 66% is painted. 86% is undercoated (And some of the undercoated models are table standard, but not finished but good enough for my challenge).

So Schedule is just about holding up. I've bought some new stuff this year, but soem of it has been painted and played with already. A lot is waiting for the CMON plastic bases to get Based and painted.

I'm waiting for my easter sale, and the toubleshooters box. I'm sure some other stuff will get bought before Gencon, and I'm hoping to get to at least 4 more tournements this year. On the whole, I would class my first quater as a B. I'm ahead of schedule, but not by a huge amount, and that schedule doesn't allow much extra for tournement practise, or repeating many model use. (I'm at 35 extra uses so far this year in a total of 169 models used)

Adran

Well another update.

Firstly, I played a tournement since my last update, fielded 3 outcast crews. The full report is in the Battle report section, but just to keep all the information of what I’ve used in one place, I’ll quickly list crews here

Game one

Extraction, Standard deployment

Misaki (Stalking bisento, Oath Keeper)

Student of Conflict

Just want to note, that I managed have every single one of my masters killed, and never killed an enemy master, but still won all 3 games. I probably should never play Warmachine.

I managed another game at the club, Vs Rufus and his Gremlins.

We Played Guard the stash and I announce Ten thunders. Schemes were Distract, Spring the Trap, Take prisoner, Line in the sand (and I can’t remember the 5th)

McCabe – Recalled Training, Badge of Speed, Glowing Sabre.

Luna

Sidir – Promises

2 Guild Hounds

Ten thunders Brother

2 Monks of the low river

Wastrel

Samurai (can’t be damaged during its own activation)

Take prisoner Rami, Distract.

Facing

Ophelia

Rami

Francois (dirty Cheater, Quality Mash Liquor)

3 young,

2 Bushwhackers

Raphael

Spring the trap, Take Prisoner McCabe.

Rufus wanted to try a combination of Franscois and Rami with as much damage as possible coming from Rami, and then him being healed up with Francois. It worked fairly well, blowing away a Low river monk on the first turn, and a samurai on the second turn, But after that a Nimble re-activating Brother charged Frank, hurt him, and then distracted them both. Next turn Frank Killed the Brother, only for a guild hound to charge and kill him, and Keep Rami engaged for the rest of the game.

My Guild Hound and low river monk did a great job of guarding 1 stash from Ophelia and Rapael and 3 young, just taking so many attacks and not dying. That and having Ht 1 models engaged with his crew meant the Eyes wide shut is much rsikier for him to try with Ophelia.

Meanwhile Luna borrowed the Sabre to kill a bushwhacker, and McCabe killed a Bushwhacker, to secure the other stash only for me, and McCabe then parked up to block a route to the second stash. We had to call it during turn 4, with me winning 6 2 at that point, and probably going to get the full 10, and since my plan was to emergency dismount turn 4, and then pop recalled Training and reactivate McCabe on Turn 5, there wasn’t any chance for the gremlins to get back.

Unfortuantly, I didn’t get as far as dismounting, so I still haven’t used Dismounted McCabe. He’ll have to come out again later.

And I may have accidently increases my collection.

I bought the Lucius Box, Crooked men and a pigapult ( to earn my Malifaux child), adding 12 models to use and paint.

I’m thinking for my sanity, of focusing efforts on 1 faction, so I can at least achieve 1 completed. To this aim, it will probably be guild, as apart form the Lucius box set I’ve just bought, I only had to paint Perdita to have them all at least sufficiently painted.

I think that’s only 31 models, with 3-6 masters to use (I have to use Hoffman, Sonnia and Perdita, where as McCabe, and my 2 Lucius’s (Lucii?) could be another faction…

It looks achievable, and wiping out 1 faction makes the challenge seem doable.

I've played 2 games since my last blog post.

One was put up in the playtest battle reports.

The other is here

Bounty Hunter

Assassinate, Bodyguard, Protect territory, Power ritual, Line in the sand.

Justice – Badge of office,

Judge – Unrelenting Leader

Guard Sergent – Watch my back

Death Marshall

2 Mounted Guards

Exocist

(assassinate and Bodyguard)

Sommer Family tree, can o beans

Burt jebson – Dirty Cheater

Pigapult

2 stuffed piglets

Roster rider

Slop Hauler

3 Bayou

2 Skeeters

(announce power ritual and plant evidence)

My Plan was to charge. Then charge some more, and finish of with further charging.

I hopped to get the 2 mounted guard close enough that one could charge, bring the other one with him, and then accomplice the second guard for the next charge (which might be away from scary retribution if I was worried about it).

Justice was going to move the rest of the crew with her charge movements (Only to be taken against my own models if I have some really bad cards to cheat with Justice)

I lost the deployment flip and so set my crew up out of all possible pigapult range. It meant I was clumped in one place largely, but I hoped with my movement I could still cover the ground quickly

Turn one saw both horses go up 1 flank (Additional wk from the Sergeant gave them a 14” walk, not too bad really).

The Sergeant then moved up. Justice Charged him, cheating to miss with both attacks, but giving everyone else a push forward.

The crew spread out a little to stop big explosions occurring to much.

One of the Skeetars engaged both horses. Despite me trying to stand for justice, I hit the only target there that wouldn’t leave combat – the far horse. Sommer got 3 new gremlins, and the slop healed 4 gremlins. The pigapult throw burt and 2 gremlins down to the corner I wasn’t in. Roster dropped a marker in his corner and moved up.

Turn 2

Pigapult sacrificed a stuffed pig and shot Judge 3 times. I used an 11 and 2 13s, and got hit once. Double negative for the flip, and the last card typically was the red joker. 10 daamge on the judge, and 5 blast damage on the exorcist, who I hadn’t quite placed out of blast range.

Justice charged burt, and pulled along the death marshall (due to my spreading out, and the need to move to get in charge range, he was the only one close enough.) Killed the nearby gremlin, but black jokered the straight flip with double critical strike on burt…

Still, I got a kill, and still had the 13 Masks in hand.

1 mounted guard failed to hurt the skeeter at all. Judge ran out of pigapult range and combat effected the other guard, who killed it in 1 hit. This unfortuantly meant I broke up my Guard pack when it moved upfield. But I didin’t think I could afford to lose an entire turn with them.

Death Marshal charged Skeetar and killed it.

Burt Attacked Justice, and got noticeably reposted. Was able to keep above hard to kill.

Rooster managed to charge Death Marshall, but miss.

I got the bounty

Turn 3

Pigapult kills last piglet and throws down on the Exorcist, killing it.(I’d foolishly left it about 23.5 inches from the pigapult rather than 24.5). Also tried to kill the death marshal, but without success (Keeps hitting the rooster instead).

Death Marshal attacks the rooster, missing, and then boxes up the bird.

Sommer summons 3 times.

Justice kills the gremlin and burt, meaning I’ve managed to holt this gremlin incursion for only 1 scheme marker dropped for plant evidence.

I Bring 1 guard up to the point it can charge sommer next turn. The other one is near enough to be able to reach the first one in its walks.

Slop hauler and gremlins come up to try and get the death marshal.

I got the bounty

Turn 4

Sommer wins initiative, and does it like this to add rams. 3 shots later, all using thinking luck, and I don’t have a mounted guard in range to charge him. To be fair, he hit with all 3 and he needed to do so to kill the Mounted guard.

I’ve now given up on trying to kill Sommer, so its what can I do to prevent gremlin points. As such I move the last horse back to try and cover my back line, and the pigapult throws a fresh wave of gremlins into my half of the board.

It also kills the death Marshal, freeing the rooster.

Justice manages to get 2 kills, but not enough for me to get a bounty. Gremlin runs out after Judge, and I have to use my last stone to live (fortunate that the Gremling chose to not use dumb luck, as that would have killed the judge as I only prevented 1 damage, btu he picked a different trigger, forgetting I had the ability to prevent damage).

0 points either way on bounty, I scored 1 bodyguard.

Turn 5

Sommer comes out to play, and managed to kill the judge. I use the mounted guard to charge one of the 2 thrown gremlins, and kill it. The other one goes reckless and drops 2 scheme markers, getting him an extra 4 scheme points in that 1 activation.

Justice fails to disengage in her fight so she couldn’t quite reach Sommer to charge.

Game ends with Sommer finally getting a bounty, ending 7-3 in his favour

My list from the otehr report was

Extraction,

Standard deployment

Assasinate, Entourage, breakthrough, Line in the sand

McMorning (necrotic preparations, Plastic Sugery, drawn to pain)

Chuauhuauhau

2 Canine remains

Night terror

Autopsy

Nurse

Belle

Rougue Necro

Shikome

Announce Entourage Hide breakthrough

Against Mr Reeves with

Tara

Tealor

Johan

Scion of the Void

Hodgepodge Emmisary (Tara Upgrade)

Gunslinger

Announced both Entourage and Breakthrough.

And I managed to summon a mindless zombie with my Guild autopsy. End result was a 10-6 win to me as I couldn't quite kill Tara amd she managed to drop the required scheme markes in my deployment zone on the last turn.

(This did mena I've now used some modles morwe than once, which is somethign I'm not sure I can afford to do too often)

I'm down to 370 models to go (1697 ss worth). so thats just under 10% of both models and cost done in 1 month. I probably need to pick up the pace, as I would like to get over 50% done in 4 months, expectign the last 50% to be harder to do.

I have a fixed faction tournement over the weekend, so thats three 50 ss games. I'm debating between Outcast and ten thunders at the moment, but I have enough in both of those to use 3 different masters easily. (ther eis always my fallback of Arcanists as well..)

On the down side, its at a gaming shop. And there is the malifaux child give away, and thats 1 of 4 outcast models I don't own... I think I might soon be owning more models...

A bump in the road...

Week 3

We went for a 3 way game due to numbers, and picked loot from the strat/scheme Deck. I was the wild card, and wanted scheme markers near an enemy deployment zone.

Line in the sand, Assassinate, Plant explosives, Cursed object and protect territory. I picked protect territory and cursed object.

I went with Lady Justice, Pale rider, Witchling handler, Austringer, Guild Guard, hunter, Govenors proxy.

Mr Reeves was still playing Lavi, and Jackel picked a very dangerous Pigapult sommer list.

Before I activated I had lost my proxy, had my guard on 1 wound, pale rider and Justice both injured and Killjoy in my deployment zone.

(Reckless the Pigapult. Sacrifice a stuffed to heal it and let it do its blast attacking action. Toss a stuffed piglet to just outside my engagement. Shoot the piglet, killing it, and making it bacon bomb as well as doing blast damage around. Unbury Killjoy, and then then for its last action it just took a pot shot at my rider. )

Made easier as we were on adjacent corners, but works fine in standard deployment as a tactic.

Game carried on from there, with Levi picking off 1 flank, and the pigapult getting the other. I got a decent number of scheme markers down, but gremlin shooting eventually brought down the pale rider, my hope for cursing all those gremlins (but out activation stopped me getting any points for it0, and Levi took assassinate on Justice, eventually burning through her defences leaving me with no-one to protect the markers.

No one managed to get the loot, so Jackal just piped Reeves 6/5 with me on 2 points.

I don’t think I really got much table time from the Proxy, which is a shame, I don’t think he is too bad, if I want a little healing, but that’s all in my head. Otherwise, everything else is roughly what I thougth before. I may still do another Justice list, I want to make the most out of bonus charges, btu this wasn’t the set up to go for it. #

The handler would have summoned me at least one stalker, but I stupidly cheated the 12Tomes on an earlier flip that turn, leaving me with 12 Crows in hand when it killed an abomination.

Now the problem. Beta Testing has opened. I enjoy beta testing models, and being “helpful”. Its going to potentially make my challenge even harder. But expect me to try out most of the emissaries since I have the Avatar models, and incorporate them into my challenge. And I reckon if I use the model in playtesting, and then buy it later in the year, it probably still counts…

The campaign system coming in August is also going to be tricky. Better make sure I get plenty played with before then.

In readiness for a 3 way game again, I finished assembling my male multipart kit into Raethford. I’ll make sure I get it painted up in the next couple of weeks, as it seems an ideal way for me to use some of the 6 ice Gamin I own…

I may even experiment with photos…

Adran

I came up with this idea a couple of days ago, but its already mid January, so I have managed a couple of games already this year.

1st – Molly Vs Mr Reeves and Levi

Guard the stash.

Molly holds a special space in my heart as the only Resurrectionist leader I had in 1.5 (although I did own almost 100 ss – Levi and Marcus are bad!). I never actually played her, at all before now in any format, despite getting her box when it was released. So that’s a good 2+ years of not play!

I wanted to play around with Horrors, so went that way.

I managed to use Validictorian, Rogue Necromancy, Bete Noir, Shikome and a nurse, and summoned in the necrotic machine and a Guild Autopsy.

Unfortunately, I killed Rusty Alyce when she was the second distracted model, and failed to get another model distracted in the game, costing me 2 points. I lost 5-6.

I didn’t summon anywhere near as many models as I hoped to. My crows were non existent. I also gave up frame for murder in an amusing way. His Abomination was paralysed next to my Necrotic machine, and on 1 wound. He activated it, cleared the paralyse, and then my machine failed its end of activation flip, took 1 damage and black blooded over the abomination killing it to give him 2 points.

2nd game

Colette Vs Mr Reeves and Levi

Interference, Schemes included Line in the sand, bodyguard, assassinate, plant explosives and frame for murder. We both went for Explosives and frame.

Crew contained Essence of Power, Silent one, Cassandra, Performer, Rail Golem (Frame for Murder). Mannequin, Malifaux Raptor.

It started badly when a burnt out Necropunk dropped a scheme marker next to my crew on turn one and scored him 3 points.

I used my Rail golem to run into the group of Rusty, Levi and Ashes and Dust. Due to my inability to charge, and some poor attack selection from me, I failed to kill anyone, but badly hurt Levi and Alyce.

Levi failed to hurt the golem, and then Ashes and dust killed me, so only 2 points.

My Raptor stopped that whole group scoring the Interference points by appearing engaged with them all at the end of turn 2

It did similar in turn 3 when it trapped the trapper up against a wall, again stopping the Interference point.

Colette managed to pull of a sneaky scheme marker drop to ne me my Plant explosives, and by the end of Turn 4 Cassandra had finally had enough of Ashes and dust, and killed him, netting him 2 points for his frame.

In the end I won 7 -5, thanks to stopping him getting any interference points.

I will say the new Colette style is quite a brain ache. I’ve not really used her this edition, and I felt more mentally tired after this game, than I normally do after a 3 round tournament.

Unfortunately I now know I’ll have to play her again, as I haven’t used Doves yet. Essence was a surprisingly useful totem, giving most of my crew a bump to casting, as well as Colette a plus flip when she spent her free ss. I did have to use either Prompt, sirens call or disappearing act on it to get it to keep up, but on the whole that was only 2 AP I spent and it stayed near most of my force pretty well.

Probably a bit too ball like to do really well in Interference, and to be able to drop too many scheme markers, but locomotion on a 3, prompt on a 6, sirens call, Freeze and even Pins from the mannequin all can benefit.

I’m at a loss with what to do with doves now they can’t magicians duel. I’m sure that using them at some point will help.

I may put off that game for a while, and make sure I use figures I know.

16 models used so far…

Just 392 models and 1788 soulstone to go

Adran

I've probably spent too long over the past week listerning to podcasts talking about hobby goals. I didn't really have any last year, and it made me think about formalising some for this year. (Fools Daily - Go give it a listern)

And I've come up with a tough one, which is worthy of blogging on a semi regular basis.

I want to use every Malifaux model I own in a game over 2015

Some starting information.

I've been collecting pretty much since the begining,

According to my collection tracker I currently own 408 figures. This is 1876 ss worth of figures.

This is spread over all 7 factions, although the only faction I own everything (released) for is Arcanist (outcasts do very well, there are actually only 4 models in total I don't own an offical model for, which is lower than the 5 Arcanists I don't own))

Ideally I want to use each individual sculpt at least once, so as I own 3 Sabertooth Cerberus, I'll need to field them at least 3 times over the year. Likewise I have 3 Rasputina models (original, alternate sculpt and Transparent blue + I also have avatar) so I need to field her 3 times at least.

Models summoned in game do count.

I will only play them if they are at least minimumly painted. (Current total has 57% painted, and 83% undercoated, but several of those that are undercoated will have some paint on them, and so can be used)

That 408 models does include Avatar sculpts. Since we currently don't have rules for them, they may get dropped from my list of playable models. I have 11 Avatars (counting the Colette avatar as 1 avatar, although it is in my model count as 3 models).

I'm quite likely to buy more models over the year. Due to my low hobby/painting time models bought after Gencon may not count.

My local games clubs meet on Tuesdays, so I'm most likely to update on wednesdays

I might include battle reports for some of the games, but I'm unlikely to include reports for them all.
