07.28.15 - The Paintening Continues

We are now halfway done with the deadline for the tournament (Aug 15), and the report is this: Finished Models Pandora, Candy, 3x Sorrow, Baby Kade, 2x Waldgeist, Lelu, Llilitu, Doppelganger, 2x Stitched Together, 3x Terror Tots, Freikorps Trapper, Freikorps Librarian, Tuco, Ama No Zako, 3x Alp, Mysterious Effigy (proxy), Iggy Unpainted Models Mr. Tannen, Mr. Graves, Coppelius, 3x The Illuminated, Convict Gunslinger, 3x Silurid, Hannah So we have 11 models in 18 days to go. Thinking Silurid next because likely all the same color scheme. And can probably crank out all three in a single day. Hannah will probably be after that, as most of her will be metallic, hopefully this weekend. Graves I started, then stopped. Tannen I have no idea how I will paint him, but probably green and white. The Illuminated, no clue at all. Coppelius, no clue. Guess I have all this time to think about what to do with them? #GrayArmyProblems

And not surprisingly in the least...

My painting task failed. Gloriously. I don't mean my efforts in the painting task were glorious, I mean the scale of failure itself was the glory. I got a week into it, then my life unraveled, and then I stopped for months. I only started recently painting again, deciding to paint what I felt like painting while in the mood, and to hell with themes or completing a crew. As a result I painted 2 Wardens, a Guardian, a Hunter, and the Mechanical Attendant. In 4 days. But that is over now. I am going to stick with what I have been doing and generally not purchase new (plastic) models until Gen Con. OOP metals on eBay are still fair game if they are reasonably priced ($60 for a Snow Storm is not reasonably priced). I really can't buy any more models anyway until I get a second display case, as it is getting VERY crowded in there. I digress, however, as I have found a new pursuit I can both do at my own pace, and still be creative - Malifaux fiction Without going into detail, there is mystery, intrigue, suspense, elements of the supernatural, and all sorts of chaos involving an inheritance - what good Victorian era story doesn't have all that?! Details to follow once I have them, but I have already short-listed some characters and am now developing the primary setting. Until then...

Half way there,

6 Month update Well, here I am, 6 months into the challenge. Its going pretty well on the whole. My Current collection is 1962ss, 414 models. I’ve played 30 games and that has used 57% of my collection. My CMON/Micro art bases arrived last week, so I can finally get around to basing the last few models I need to base, meaning Dreamer, Kirai and the Gremlin Faction become playable soon. (well for a given degree of playable) So a look at the numbers Collection of 414 models (47 Masters) totalling 1962 ss I’ve still got to use 197 models (24 masters) totalling 842 ss Arcanist:- From my 101 models (15 masters) at 464ss, I’ve got 77 models (13 masters) at 364ss to go Guild:- 62 models (9 Masters) at 279ss, 19 models (3 masters) at 82ss to go Ressers:- 73 Models (8 Masters) at 296ss, 20 models (3 masters) at 72ss to go Neverborn 74 models (9 masters) at 355ss, 22 models (2 masters) at 69ss to go Outcast 75 models (8 masters) at 317 ss, 17 models (2 masters) at 69 ss to go Ten thunders:-56 models (7 Masters) at 261ss, 23 Models (2 masters) at 113 ss to go Gremlin:-21 models (3 masters) at 86 ss, 18 models (2 masters) at 74ss to go I have deliberately left the Arcanist faction so far, since I know I’ve got 2 2day tournements to go to that I want to do well at, and the plan has always been to play Arcanists at them. (5 round and 7 round) Guild is left with Sonnia, Lucius and McCabe, because in the game I played with him, he didn’t dismount, so I have got to get him off the horse. I’ve got to use 3 lawyers and 3 guild guard still. Resurectionists have Kirai, and a lot of her crew to go, so its possible I’d use most of what I have left in 1 game with her. I also have 2 Seamus games to get in. Neverborn Have Dreamer and Lucius. The 2 young Nephlim are probably the hardest to fit in to a list, (Having failed to grow any tots when I tried) but I can probably knock most of the list off when I play Dreamer if I go for the summoning upgrade. Outcast have Misaki and Leveticus to go. I’ve left Leveticus till near the end as he is a good one for picking up odds and ends for his lists. Ten thunders have Misaki and McCabe. Minion wise they are probably going to be one of the strangest to finish. I’ve got 3 Oiran and 3 Torkage to go, as well as 2 archers and 2 Ten thunders Brothers. I expect Misaki will be used here picking up a lot of those. Gremlins have Wong and Sommer, and once I’ve based my figures, I’ll probably get a Sommer game and remove a decent amount of the list in 1 go. When I put it that way, it doesn’t sound like a lot left. Maybe I can afford to buy more stuff. I’ve not bought a huge amount this year so far, but that is more due to them not releasing things I don’t have. I’m waiting for Ironsides to hit my local shop, and will be picking up at least the Dark Carnival at Gencon. (Plus most of Shifting loyalties, the 2 player starter set, and I’m sure there is other things that will tempt me. I want to do the 3 headed list with Sow, Rogue necromancy and as many Cerberus as I can fit in, so I’ll need a sow…) Hobbywise I’ve managed to paint a lot of my figures, to at least a block colour stage. Not well enough to count as finished but painted well enough to play with. I haven’t done much on Board building (but have bought a 3” square rubber mat, and 18 1foot square terrain tiles, so I should hopefully have something sorted. In my first 2 tournaments of the year I did pretty well, 2nd in Dover whilst being Undefeated, and then second in the taelorn doubles, but last month I went to the Summer showdown and did rubbish (by my standards). I lost 3 and won 1. And it was with Neverborn, who I have done fine with before. It might be that the playing everything has dulled my edge. (or the Curse of the Marshall) Over all I’ve won 12 out of the 30 games (3 of the loses were in 3 way games). I probably would have won nearer 20 normally, but would have used a much smaller pool of models. Report wise, Work has got hectic, and most of my report writing is normally in the morning whilst I’m avoiding going into the Lab because other people aren’t here yet, so its fallen by the wayside. I hope to get more reports written up, and some discussion on some of the figures.

Scheming and running

Last night at Durham Raiders was my ninth game of Malifaux, and my ninth win. This time though instead of setting out to beat the life out of my opponents models I thought I would actually try scheme running and denial for a change. The schemes I took were Assassinate and Cursed Object, the shared strategy was Squatter’s Rights. David was running Brewmaster and co. so I decided to just run McCabe’s box as Sidir and the Wastrels are immune to WP duels in their own Activation getting around one of the main problems with Brewmaster. I also took Luna to do a lot of running around the board. As part of the league there are certain achievements that we have to gain for points and one of them is to let your opponent setup your crew, we both decided to tick this box tonight so we both setup crews in huddles in far corners… My plan was to give make Luna Badge of Speed and keep McCabe near her to make sure I could get it back if needed, this worked quite well in that I had claimed 3 Squat Markers by the end of turn 2, and was able to protect them and hand off a couple of Scheme Markers for Cursed Object by the end of turn three. I kept the Wastrel’s and Sidir as a group, using their healing and shooting to deal with the Brewmaster to claim Assassinate before the end of turn 3 getting full points for it. I was slowed a bit when Sidir was paralysed but the Wastrels healed him and were able to shoot a few other things to death, one Wastrel made a claim on David’s Squat Marker after the model near it had moved off denying him more than one VP for Squatter’s Rights throughout the game. On turn 5 I could have got rid of one of David’s Scheme Markers to deny him points for his scheme but I didn’t, rather I concentrated on making sure I got points for my own schemes and secured the strategy areas. In the end it was my 9VP to David's 3VP and I didn't even kill most of his models to do it (which has been my usual way of playing up until now ), I was glad to remember Cursed Object, as I usually forget to do these types of schemes, or haven't even attempted them. I’m looking forward to getting Miss Ann Thrope during the GenCon period as I know I will spend the qualifying amount on the site, just wondering if I can get a couple as they are multi-pose models allegedly. It would be good to get these different models for the Wastrel, though I don’t use them often I do like using them now and again as they are cheap and give out reasonable offence when in a group and the fact that they are Ruthless really helps. Was a fun game with David, I’m looking forward to adding the Brewmaster to my Ten Thunders collection, now onto the nest games which should all be at 40SS, have some fun ideas for these with a really mixed collection that I’m getting together, just wish I could get me some Guild Hounds. Where did the time go?

Hmm, its already June and I haven’t updated in 2 months. Again. Work has been busier that I expected, and I’ve not been writing up all my games properly, so I haven’t felt like I had anything to post. But I have still been playing. Since the last Update I’ve Played Joes Kirai list twice, once with Nicodem, and once with Mei Feng. And I proved Mei is twice as good as Nicodem. 9I lost 10-1 with Nico. I lost 10-2 with Mei). So other than learning I don’t know how to beat Joe with Kirai, what else did I learn? Using the vuilture to summon from all over the board is pretty good. Putting the Vulture within Izamu’s threat range is not good when that is your plan. Mei almost ripped apart the Kiari bubble, but losing initiative, and then Datsuba managing to get 2 moderate damage results on negative flips 2 attacks in a row, whilst I only got weak on damage prevention finished of Mei before she could take apart the list. Kang with Thunder archers and samurai worked fairly nicely, but not enough to shrink the crew below its starting size. I used a Lucius Crew against Sonnia, and suffered a slight loss. I used Jacob Lynch against Levi, and lost. Mainly due to my own stupidity. Rusty Alyce burn out 2 necropunks, and I used Tuco to kill one. Levi managed to kill Tuco in return. I managed to get Hundering darkness to “obey” alyce, and instead of shootinmg at the necorpunk still on 1 wound I shot at a waif and failed to kill it. To make matters worse, that necropunk was the frame for murder Target, so I’d have been in a great place. Hungvering Darkness took a 4 ap turn from levi and survived. And when huggy took his turn did enough to Johan to heal up signifigantly, and get Johan down to hard to kill, and not having the cards in hand to pass the fear given form test I would force on him, he couldn’t risk activating him next. Alas the necropunk ran off and dropped some claim markers in my half, and along with Ashes and dust manged to out claim me. I did forget about Cursed object until turn 3, and fior turns 4 and 5 there was literally only 1 abomination on the table that I could have put it on, and he kept running away from all my models. (I hadn’t realised beckoners couldn’t cause disengaging strikes until the abomination just walked away and around a corner. ) And I’ve just used the Viks to takle on a McMorning crew in which I showed why you want to resolve the poison condition on models before you remove the welcome to malifaux from Taelor. This was a 9-3 win. Although I almost didn’t Assasinate McMorning. I did chargewith both Viks under Sisters in Fury. And they both survived for me to win initiative again next turn and finally kill the good doctor. One thing I have noticed is when I enter my model usage into my spreadsheet, the percentage used barely seems to go up and its quite discouraging. Probably not helped by several of my early games involved summoning, which gets lots of models used. I have a 4 round 50 ss tournement in a weeks’ time, which will probably involve Neverborn. As long as I don’t duplicate much I should finally cross the halfway point of the task. I own 1962 ss. I still have 1128 ss to use. I’ve had 23 games to date this year. I have 28 master models to go. (that Includes 12 Arcanist Masters, even if I don’t buy the trouble shooters box!). I’ve Barely touched Arcanists this year (deliberately, I’m saving them for the GT), so they still have 405 SS to use. Guild, Gremlins and Resurrectionist are waiting for CMON bases and Painting, but once those bases arrive will hopefully be finished off in 8 or so games. (except for the War Rabbit which is almost certainly going to get used with Marcus and the jackalope to really make people fear the bunnies!) I will update in early July, to give a 6 month summery (although this is pretty close).

Even in death I serve...

One of my latest projects, Iazmu was my attempt to paint something a bit bigger and create a centrepiece for my Yan Lo crew. I made a decision not to weather his armour because, despite being hundreds of years old, I imagine he gets treated with rather a lot of respect by his decendants and has his laquer, enamel and metal surfaces polished well before entering battle. The arrows are clearly freshly embedded... While Misaki and her crew feature bases decorated with meadow flowers, I wanted something a little more aged for the ancestors, so an old wood dojo floor and creeping poison ivy feature for Izamu. I hope to share more of the crew soon

Mistress Misaki

Hi all, welcome to my wee corner of the site dedicated to my growing Ten Thunders collection. I figured I would start at the beginning, with my first and still favourite master, the lotus-blossom-of-death that is Misaki. The rest of her crew, the other Last Blossom models, and then some Ancestors will follow soon

McCabe and crew

So I've just built my first crew for the slow grow league starting tonight. I finally settled on McCabe so I can add Guild and Ten Thunder models to the crew to flesh it out. There is not a lick of paint on the models yet, not sure if I will paint them or just pass that on to someone else

Intro to Malifaux

Had a great time last night at the Durham Raiders club for a couple of reasons: Went to a new club and met another group of people who shared my hobbies
Played my first game of Malifaux
Now even though point one is extremely important and was really fun as the club was well run and really welcoming, point two was the main exercise of the night. I have been humming and hawing for months on the viability of me continuing with Warhammer in any way whatsoever and came to the decision to start selling off my big armies to get into skirmish gaming and one of the first games that tickled my fancy was Malifaux. I really loved the look of the models (and now I’ve seen them close up am totally blown away with the sculpts) and the steampunk/fantasy/horror theme really looked great. It was great that another couple of Darlington’s Dogs of War club members fancied transitioning into Malifaux as well as this gave me more reason to go that way. The Dreamer and crew As part of this I picked up a pre-painted Neverborn crew to get me started and to see if I really like the game system, Lee has painted this great Dreamer crew which I’m really looking forward to trying out. I will be fleshing out the Neverborn faction but the faction I really want to get to grips with is the Outcasts (and most specifically The Viktorias). Whilst talking about this change from Warhammer to Malifaux online I was offered a chance to play a learner game with Andrew Newton. Of course I jumped at the chance. I met him and David at the Durham Raiders club and after a getting to know you chat (which was great fun guys ) Andrew and I got down to play. Rasputina He had opened two small crews to learn with, I was playing Rasputina, Ice Golem and three Ice Gamin whilst Andrew was using Sonnia Crid, Samael Hopkins and three Witching Stalker. I think it was good fortune that I had just finished my first read through of the rules (and just finished listening to a podcast about Rasputina) as a lot of the rules and strategies seemed to click into place very quickly. We used a lovely set of Old West laser cut scenery that gave it the impression of a showdown at noon, which really added to the flavour. We only ran the Reckoning Strategy just to see how Victory Points (VP) worked. From the start of the game, apart from 2 Black Jokers, I seemed to Flip and Cheat really well, never really kicking off any of my major triggers though. I kept tossing Gamin forwards and Ice Mirrored Rasputina’s 12″ range Shooting attacks through them, this seemed to work really well

W.I.P.

So...after a hectic week and weekend, i have finished assembly and have my metal Taelor 90% finished. I love the detail on her and she was fun to paint. However, the Female kit is a bit problematic. The parts seem a little disorganized and it can be a bit hard to match up some of the arms to the items with premolded hands. Not a big deal in this project, but for my other one it was a bother. Oh well....still very happy with it so far. Back to the workshop. Stay Wyrd...and remember, Gremlin brew causes odd forms of flatulence.

Ideas.

Ok...you've seen my reasons and opinions of the plastic crew. Now to see what i'm going to do to fix them. Monday(5/11/15) I went to my LGS to just look around and see what I could see. To my surprise, I found found the 1.5 Vik's crew, and I am not ashamed to admit I had a girlish giggle moment. So with the purchase of it and the Through the Breach Female Kit,ideas began to surface in the mass of Swiss cheese filled with Tofu i call a brain. First, I would assemble and paint both the Metal Viks along with Taelor, which should be the easy part(I hope) Second, I would use TtB kit to make 3 Ronin up based on ideas i had of people who left the faction they where once a member of. Here are the ideas I have for them: Ronin #1: An ex Guild Guard that was tired of the 2 faced tactics the Guild employs. The model has the sword on the kit and one of the holstered pistols on her left hip with her hand on it so she can draw if needed. To honor a friend of mine, I will be painting the mini's hair purple. Ronin #2: A young woman that had dreams of joining Colette's Showgirl troupe, she had the looks but not the talent. I gave the model the cigarette and the derringer from the set, and the skirt with the exposed leg. Ronin #3 An ex M&SU member who after losing an arm and leg to the Union, she left after getting her replacements, deciding a life on the run was better than a life of servitude to an organization that caused her limb loss in the first place. This mini will have both one of the steam-tech legs and arms, and a minor conversion involving Jakob Lynch's coiled bullwhip. And yes..she has a hip pistol also. This harkems back to the original metal models where you had a melee equipped model(m&su girl),a ranged model(showgirl) and a model ready to use either weapon option(guard). Also..i'm keeping the Student as is...i like her.

Reasons and opinions.

Ok so why am I doing this? As I posted earlier, some of the Plastic models in the crew that, while nice, just don't seem to look nice or good to me. So, to understand my reasoning,i thought I would give my views on how the models look. And to make it understandable, i will go from the best looking of the mini's to the worst. Student of Conflict::This is my favorite in the set, and she looks like what she is supposed to in my opinion. A youngish girl(10-13??)that looks like a private school student that got lost in Malifaux and was taken under the wing of some mercenaries. Plus the sword reminds me of Cloud from FF7. I give the model a 7/10. Vik of Ashes: Out of the 2 Viks, she's my favorite. The pose is nice, and i do like the sword. My problem with the model is in my opinion her hair looks to much like she's going to an 80's punk concert instead of a woman in a version of the Wild West mythos, which took place from the late 1780s to the early 1920s in America. Also, they Viks are supposed to be seductive to slutty depending on the way you look at them. But the figure looks almost as if she's afraid to show skin. That's not a bad thing, but from the fluff(especially in the 2nd ed rule book story) she doesn't seem scantily clad enough. Not a bad model, but it just doesn't seem to fit the fluff. I give her 6/10 Vik of Blood: Another nice model with good and bad points. First the good. She fits the look from the above mentioned fluff story better than her sister, her hair seems to fit better in my opinion, and she does look like a hardened merc. Her pose though is where I have my problem, along with her face. It seems to me that with her pose if she stood up, she would be taller than her "sister",which doesn't make sense as they are supposed to be identical in looks. Which is also my problem with her face..it just doesn't seem to match up. But it's still a good figure..just like her "sister",doesn't match up in my opinion. Another 6/10. "Yellow" Ronin(drawing Daito): Ok...this is the ONLY Ronin in my opinion that is worth it,and that isn't saying to much. She at least looks somewhat respectful, and i can see her as an ex 10 Thunder's member who got tired of the rules and left the Faction. So..im ok with her. My Problem with her is where is her Pistol?? The older Metal versions 2 of the 3 had the pistol, which seems to make more sense. Plus all 3 look like they are women that though attractive, will hurt you. And this mini just doesn't seem to have the same sense to her. Still, a solid 5/10 "Blue" Ronin(Pigtails): Interesting. I thought Ronin meant "Master less Samurai" not "Asian street walker with swords". I'm not trying to insult any Asian person with my comment, but she looks in my opinion like either a streetwalker or a stripper trying to be a ninja warrior. The Model isn't bad...but I just..I just don't like it as a Ronin. Still, it's an ok model, even if it has no pistol. 4.75/10 "Red" Ronin(kneeling): If the above mini looks like a stripper/streetwalker pretending to be a ninja in my eyes, this one looks like a girl in a "sexy ninja girl" Halloween costume. Just doesn't seem to be a sword for hire model. And once again...no pistol. 4/10 Taelor: This..just makes me want to cry. How could they turn a woman that in the fluff is a strong sexy amazon warrior that is calling out her next victim(least that's what i get from the metal model) to this derpy looking woman that looks like she can barely hold her hammer. She looks thinner and weaker than the original mini, and as one of my favorite characters in the world...this is just not acceptable. The plastic model is in my opinion of the 2 or 3 worst models made by Wyrd, and just don't seem as good as some of the others i own and seen. Don't get me wrong...i love Wyrd's minis....just not this one. 0.25/10...just doesn't work for me at all. This has been a very long winded and very opinionated list of reasons why I'm changing the crew around. Thank you for sticking with me so far, and my next blog will explain how i intend to "fix" the crew. Later all.....and Stay Wyrd.

The beginning..or why I'm doing this.

Greetings fellow Wyrdlings, and other visitors and other living(or living impaired) visitors. This is the first entry in a series of blogs about my Viktoria crew and what i'm doing to them. First, the reasons:: I love the Viktoria crew for 2nd Edition. They where my second crew and the first crew I ever won a game using,so they will always hold a special place in my heart. But I do have some issues with the crew, and they all stem from the appearance of the models. Now,i'm not saying the models look bad(well, most of them), but in my opinion they just don't seem to fit in with the fluff of the crew as I understand. So, I've been looking for awhile for options to fix the look they have. So, before I go into what i'm doing with the crew,I figured I would explain what my problems with the crew is and what my ideas for the fix is for them. And yes, not only will I have pictures of what I do to fix the models(i.e. the new models) I will also be posting why I feel like they need to be changed. That's the next part, so if not interested, you may want to skip ahead to a later blog.

Ooops.

Argh! I’ve not been able to update this for nearly 2 months. I have played some games in that time. I have started to write some battle reports for them, but not yet finished them. As I find time I will try and write more and add them here. Games I’ve played but not written about Hoffman (Howard, Metal Gamin, Guardian, Witchling, Mecanical attendant, Warden, Watcher) A 3 way Vs Tara and Sonnia in a loot game (I was the middle player, and Lost). Pandora (Poltigiest, Teddy, Illuminated, Candy Coppelius) ina 3 way loot game (I was in the middle) Vs Kirai and Tara. I lost Hoffman (peacekeeper, Mechanical Attendent, Exocutioner, guardian, watcher, metal Gamin, Death Marshal) Vs Kirai in Reconnotre. I lost Hamilin (Kade, Nix, Specialist, Wretch, Stolen and 3 rats and a catcher Vs Viks in Extraction. (Plus at leats 2 more stolem, 15 more rats, 2 more catchers and 2 rat kings so good for percetages) I lost, but those Viks really hate Rats. They got 5 Red Joker damage flips in the game, and they were all against Rast. They also Red Jokered a Df flip against a rat. Molly Vs Tara in Interference (25 SS game) Using Rafkin, Belle, Crooked man and a canine remains. + 5 mindless zombies, 4 belles and 4 doxies. I lost, but summoners really get theough my pool. This was practise for a doubles Tournement against my partner –CrikeyMiles, Or Mike as I normally call him. 3 doubles games when I used Molly alongside the following Tara List (Tara, Karina, Toshiro, Yin) First was Turf war Vs Viks and Colette I used Dead Doxy, Punk Zombie, Crooked man and a nurse for a win Second was Interference Vs McCabe and Yan lo and I took Shikome, Nurse, Chaiki and a cruligan. Kang supporting a gun line of 2 riflemen, an Austringer and a Katanaka sniper, and beign healed by Yan lo is pretty tough to crack. 7-6 win (earnt by pretty much the last move of the last turn to engage Yan lo to deny him an interference point that turn) Third was Reckoning with Rogue Necromancy, grave spirit, Dead Doxy, Cruligan. Lost to Guilds Mc Brothers as Mcmorning and McCabe took us apart 3-0. (they got a frame for murder, and 1 reckoning point. We killed McMorning all game). So I’m a little past the quarter stage of the year. According to my spread sheet I currently own 1951 ss of Models. That’s across 422 models, of which I own 46 Master models (Looking at it I have 15 Arcanist Master models! And that isn’t including the Avatar models) I still have 1304 ss to use and 35 master Figures (Typically, whilst I’ve duplicated 3 masters so far this year, they were masters I only had 1 copy of). I have played a total of 33% of my models. I have played 17 games. I have 408ss of Arcanist models to play 75 ss gremlins 144ss Guild 317 Neverborn 130 Outcast 107 Resurectionist 123 Ten thunders (obviously there is some duel faction, but I’ve only included it in whichever Faction I counted first). Approxamatly 66% is painted. 86% is undercoated (And some of the undercoated models are table standard, but not finished but good enough for my challenge). So Schedule is just about holding up. I've bought some new stuff this year, but soem of it has been painted and played with already. A lot is waiting for the CMON plastic bases to get Based and painted. I'm waiting for my easter sale, and the toubleshooters box. I'm sure some other stuff will get bought before Gencon, and I'm hoping to get to at least 4 more tournements this year. On the whole, I would class my first quater as a B. I'm ahead of schedule, but not by a huge amount, and that schedule doesn't allow much extra for tournement practise, or repeating many model use. (I'm at 35 extra uses so far this year in a total of 169 models used)

Current Painting Task

So, first and foremost, the background about me, my painting skills, and the task ahead... I started tabletop gaming over a decade ago with the 4th Edition release of Tyranids for Warhammer 40k. My painting skills were, lack of any better term, total shit. I globbed paint on everything, couldn't do anything with details, and generally made a mess of flocking and basing no matter what. That was when I was introduced to drybrushing, and I haven't looked back since. All this time later, I still cannot do detail work for the life of me, nor do I care to. What I have done in the meanwhile, however, is developed my drybrush and wash skills. I also learned how to work with paint mixing and layering. As a result, I can paint anything with dynamic, bold color combinations. I also taught myself how to scratch build and mod minis, which resulted in two Super Heavy vehicles for 40k, both of which have yet to meet their equal around these parts (in terms of originality and paint work, they're just fire magnets on the table). This one requires outside reading

Well another update. Firstly, I played a tournement since my last update, fielded 3 outcast crews. The full report is in the Battle report section, but just to keep all the information of what I’ve used in one place, I’ll quickly list crews here Game one Extraction, Standard deployment Misaki (Stalking bisento, Oath Keeper) Student of Conflict Strong arm suit (oath Keeper) Sue (oath Keeper) Convict Gunslinger(wait what do you mean Oath keeper is rare 3. Ok, no upgrades) Void Wretch Hodgepodge effigy Desperate Merc. Secret Assassinate and Take McTavish Prisoner 7-6 win Game 2 Reckoning Tara –Obliteration symbiote, Oath Keeper, Scramble Nothing Beast – Void Shield Karina – (summoning upgrade) Ama No Zaki – Oath Keeper Bishop – Oath Keeper Hodgepodge effigy Void wretch, 8-5 win Game 3 Head hunter Von Schill (shirt comes off, oath keeper, my way) Steam truck Rusty Alyce (Abomination summoning upgrade) Hannah (oath keeper) 2 Abominations Desperate Merc Friekorpsman 6-4 win Just want to note, that I managed have every single one of my masters killed, and never killed an enemy master, but still won all 3 games. I probably should never play Warmachine. I managed another game at the club, Vs Rufus and his Gremlins. We Played Guard the stash and I announce Ten thunders. Schemes were Distract, Spring the Trap, Take prisoner, Line in the sand (and I can’t remember the 5th) McCabe – Recalled Training, Badge of Speed, Glowing Sabre. Luna Sidir – Promises 2 Guild Hounds Ten thunders Brother 2 Monks of the low river Wastrel Samurai (can’t be damaged during its own activation) Take prisoner Rami, Distract. Facing Ophelia Rami Francois (dirty Cheater, Quality Mash Liquor) 3 young, 2 Bushwhackers Raphael Spring the trap, Take Prisoner McCabe. Rufus wanted to try a combination of Franscois and Rami with as much damage as possible coming from Rami, and then him being healed up with Francois. It worked fairly well, blowing away a Low river monk on the first turn, and a samurai on the second turn, But after that a Nimble re-activating Brother charged Frank, hurt him, and then distracted them both. Next turn Frank Killed the Brother, only for a guild hound to charge and kill him, and Keep Rami engaged for the rest of the game. My Guild Hound and low river monk did a great job of guarding 1 stash from Ophelia and Rapael and 3 young, just taking so many attacks and not dying. That and having Ht 1 models engaged with his crew meant the Eyes wide shut is much rsikier for him to try with Ophelia. Meanwhile Luna borrowed the Sabre to kill a bushwhacker, and McCabe killed a Bushwhacker, to secure the other stash only for me, and McCabe then parked up to block a route to the second stash. We had to call it during turn 4, with me winning 6 2 at that point, and probably going to get the full 10, and since my plan was to emergency dismount turn 4, and then pop recalled Training and reactivate McCabe on Turn 5, there wasn’t any chance for the gremlins to get back. Unfortuantly, I didn’t get as far as dismounting, so I still haven’t used Dismounted McCabe. He’ll have to come out again later. And I may have accidently increases my collection. I bought the Lucius Box, Crooked men and a pigapult ( to earn my Malifaux child), adding 12 models to use and paint. I’m thinking for my sanity, of focusing efforts on 1 faction, so I can at least achieve 1 completed. To this aim, it will probably be guild, as apart form the Lucius box set I’ve just bought, I only had to paint Perdita to have them all at least sufficiently painted. I think that’s only 31 models, with 3-6 masters to use (I have to use Hoffman, Sonnia and Perdita, where as McCabe, and my 2 Lucius’s (Lucii?) could be another faction… It looks achievable, and wiping out 1 faction makes the challenge seem doable.

Attempt two - This tiem with added font size

I've played 2 games since my last blog post. One was put up in the playtest battle reports. The other is here Bounty Hunter Assassinate, Bodyguard, Protect territory, Power ritual, Line in the sand. Justice – Badge of office, Judge – Unrelenting Leader Guard Sergent – Watch my back Death Marshall 2 Mounted Guards Exocist (assassinate and Bodyguard) Sommer Family tree, can o beans Burt jebson – Dirty Cheater Pigapult 2 stuffed piglets Roster rider Slop Hauler 3 Bayou 2 Skeeters (announce power ritual and plant evidence) My Plan was to charge. Then charge some more, and finish of with further charging. I hopped to get the 2 mounted guard close enough that one could charge, bring the other one with him, and then accomplice the second guard for the next charge (which might be away from scary retribution if I was worried about it). Justice was going to move the rest of the crew with her charge movements (Only to be taken against my own models if I have some really bad cards to cheat with Justice) I lost the deployment flip and so set my crew up out of all possible pigapult range. It meant I was clumped in one place largely, but I hoped with my movement I could still cover the ground quickly Turn one saw both horses go up 1 flank (Additional wk from the Sergeant gave them a 14” walk, not too bad really). The Sergeant then moved up. Justice Charged him, cheating to miss with both attacks, but giving everyone else a push forward. The crew spread out a little to stop big explosions occurring to much. One of the Skeetars engaged both horses. Despite me trying to stand for justice, I hit the only target there that wouldn’t leave combat – the far horse. Sommer got 3 new gremlins, and the slop healed 4 gremlins. The pigapult throw burt and 2 gremlins down to the corner I wasn’t in. Roster dropped a marker in his corner and moved up. Turn 2 Pigapult sacrificed a stuffed pig and shot Judge 3 times. I used an 11 and 2 13s, and got hit once. Double negative for the flip, and the last card typically was the red joker. 10 daamge on the judge, and 5 blast damage on the exorcist, who I hadn’t quite placed out of blast range. Justice charged burt, and pulled along the death marshall (due to my spreading out, and the need to move to get in charge range, he was the only one close enough.) Killed the nearby gremlin, but black jokered the straight flip with double critical strike on burt… Still, I got a kill, and still had the 13 Masks in hand. 1 mounted guard failed to hurt the skeeter at all. Judge ran out of pigapult range and combat effected the other guard, who killed it in 1 hit. This unfortuantly meant I broke up my Guard pack when it moved upfield. But I didin’t think I could afford to lose an entire turn with them. Death Marshal charged Skeetar and killed it. Burt Attacked Justice, and got noticeably reposted. Was able to keep above hard to kill. Rooster managed to charge Death Marshall, but miss. I got the bounty Turn 3 Pigapult kills last piglet and throws down on the Exorcist, killing it.(I’d foolishly left it about 23.5 inches from the pigapult rather than 24.5). Also tried to kill the death marshal, but without success (Keeps hitting the rooster instead). Death Marshal attacks the rooster, missing, and then boxes up the bird. Sommer summons 3 times. Justice kills the gremlin and burt, meaning I’ve managed to holt this gremlin incursion for only 1 scheme marker dropped for plant evidence. I Bring 1 guard up to the point it can charge sommer next turn. The other one is near enough to be able to reach the first one in its walks. Slop hauler and gremlins come up to try and get the death marshal. I got the bounty Turn 4 Sommer wins initiative, and does it like this to add rams. 3 shots later, all using thinking luck, and I don’t have a mounted guard in range to charge him. To be fair, he hit with all 3 and he needed to do so to kill the Mounted guard. I’ve now given up on trying to kill Sommer, so its what can I do to prevent gremlin points. As such I move the last horse back to try and cover my back line, and the pigapult throws a fresh wave of gremlins into my half of the board. It also kills the death Marshal, freeing the rooster. Justice manages to get 2 kills, but not enough for me to get a bounty. Gremlin runs out after Judge, and I have to use my last stone to live (fortunate that the Gremling chose to not use dumb luck, as that would have killed the judge as I only prevented 1 damage, btu he picked a different trigger, forgetting I had the ability to prevent damage). 0 points either way on bounty, I scored 1 bodyguard. Turn 5 Sommer comes out to play, and managed to kill the judge. I use the mounted guard to charge one of the 2 thrown gremlins, and kill it. The other one goes reckless and drops 2 scheme markers, getting him an extra 4 scheme points in that 1 activation. Justice fails to disengage in her fight so she couldn’t quite reach Sommer to charge. Game ends with Sommer finally getting a bounty, ending 7-3 in his favour My list from the otehr report was Extraction, Standard deployment Assasinate, Entourage, breakthrough, Line in the sand McMorning (necrotic preparations, Plastic Sugery, drawn to pain) Chuauhuauhau 2 Canine remains Night terror Autopsy Nurse Belle Rougue Necro Shikome Announce Entourage Hide breakthrough Against Mr Reeves with Tara Tealor Johan Scion of the Void Hodgepodge Emmisary (Tara Upgrade) Gunslinger Announced both Entourage and Breakthrough. And I managed to summon a mindless zombie with my Guild autopsy. End result was a 10-6 win to me as I couldn't quite kill Tara amd she managed to drop the required scheme markes in my deployment zone on the last turn. (This did mena I've now used some modles morwe than once, which is somethign I'm not sure I can afford to do too often) I'm down to 370 models to go (1697 ss worth). so thats just under 10% of both models and cost done in 1 month. I probably need to pick up the pace, as I would like to get over 50% done in 4 months, expectign the last 50% to be harder to do. I have a fixed faction tournement over the weekend, so thats three 50 ss games. I'm debating between Outcast and ten thunders at the moment, but I have enough in both of those to use 3 different masters easily. (ther eis always my fallback of Arcanists as well..) On the down side, its at a gaming shop. And there is the malifaux child give away, and thats 1 of 4 outcast models I don't own... I think I might soon be owning more models...

Why not Ada Borden? - my observations of freedom of speech on an internet community

Just to introduce my self as a Malifaux player and a part of this community before I start getting on to the point: - This is my first blog ever and it's in English language which is not my first language, so please bear with me. Feel free to correct me, both on the claims I make and any grammar I might have fudged up. I'd really like to see some discussion and criticism, so I hope people will read this with an open mind. - I've gotten into Malifaux through the fluff and artwork and te community is the reason I stayed. I'm only a beginner miniature painter and not a very good player. I've got a lot of minis and the strongest part of my hobby besides the knowledge of fluff is my mini conversion skill. I will save all of these things for the future entries in this blog. So without further ado, I'm opening the todays topic. Yesterday I got insulted on a Wyrds forum and I actually had someone defend me today, which reminded me of why I love this community. It's not because I was labeled as a creepy pervert I felt insulted, but whenever there is even any sort of point to be made on some theme that's dealing with societal symbols, issues, fandoms or whatever there is misguided political correctness thrown about laced with some angry social rights rudeness. I made a comment and people started reading into my post and putting words into my (proverbial) mouth. Actually at first I got upset, then after I cooled off I got angry because I got upset about stupid things that happen on the internet and I started writing a post for the offtopic forum on this site. Before I posted it, it seemed too personal and I deleted it, so a day later I decided to start a blog with a similar topic of the unwritten post. If this is a good media for it, I'd like to have an open discussion about a way people tend to communicate issues on the internet when they have their sensibilities hurt or when they misenterpret something like in my case. I feel strongly about the way this problem is vocal in this community because I suppose I share this hobby with an ok bunch of people and not some anonymous douchebags and I think freedom of speech shouldn't shut people out with its agressive stance. Couple of weeks prior to my misinterpreted post there was a Lizzie Lovelace thread where people felt insulted because of a possible correlation with an abused pornstar and there were other mentions of pornstars and it somehow got tied to my post about tentacles. What hurts in this respect is that I love the story of Malifaux in its whole romantical insanity with its injustices and rare positive moments and people have a need to hamfist realism with its most boring moral prejudicies into ficton where it isn't needed. Venting finished, on to the topic. A lot of player created content gets published in the Wyrd Chronicles, Some player created content gets introduced in the games rules via beta testing and some of it comes from participation in various story tournaments and contests which sometime seep into the games ficitional world. This is all great and it makes me happy. The community has for the most part brought in a lot of positive changes to the game through the beta testing waves for which I'm along the ride for the fourth time now. And we've even seen some concept art being changed for the better (maybe not in the case of new Perdita, but it might be my personal preference that I prefer the alternate model than the one sold in her crew box). If a player, or a reader feels offended by a social issue which is happening in a fictional world or a game the noise surrounding these injustices start to be very loud (and in my opinion very obnoxious). There is no thing such as a bad press, but because Wyrd listens to their player base and I guess it wears them down, because its employees do read most of posts in social media and its forums and they become more careful about it in the future. The social issues I'm mentioning are usually based on real world issues and these things shouldn't be considered in every possible instance, unless it goes against basic human decency (like Viktoria of blood wearing only leather belts, but in a perfect world even that shouldn't be a moral issue). I belive the developers have set the tone of their world and game and there won't be big tonal shifts and things that just feel wrong with it. From its beginning over year and a half ago beta testing has become a bit different, we start to hear less details and we as a playerbase participate in a different way because there is too much noise and stuff gets lost in translation, not just between Wyrd and the players, but between players themselves. But that's not my only point. There will always be a wedge between people because of their different preferances and just because we're not all alike. The point I wanted to discuss is all this social justice stuff, because when something is deemed sexist, racist, harmful to some minority it gets more weight than it deserves and there are too many negative conotations and it drives people off and it gets unwanted exposure for all the wrong reasons. In the fiction when there are issues which are handeled like they are happening now and here the story and the immersion suffers and these things happen to a popular book, game, movie or whatever. Because of its ritchness fans get vocal about it, they feel like they are a part of something and they have to defend it and its sensibilities as if they are their own. That's all because a lot of different symbols get mixed up and the reality and ficition start feeling like one and same thing and the fictional world should have a freedom of its own, it should live apart from ourselves and be freely explored by its authors without significant outside meddling (like pressuring George R.R. Martin to finish Game of Thrones serial because he's getting old). There are countless critics (both profesisional and unprofessional), youtube, social media, journalism, advertisments and all these should have an outside veiw on a work of fiction. The final judge should be our own imagination and while sometimes a well placed criticism or review can change your world view, it's not a definitive answer to your own interpretation of the product, or a work of art. Todays world has countless personal freedoms and it is objectivly less painful, missing a lot of desease and misery that is a big part of the world of Malifaux. We have more social rights than ever before and on the other side there is also this fantastic and also horrible world of old (which has magic along its pain and hardships) which draws its realism from fiction and popular culture. It's very immersive and the problem and the blessing is that you get to play games in it, paint and build your own characters and participate in the world. It's impossible to make everyone happy with a product, but the game itself gives you freedom to change the things your don't like about the setting. I used to play a lot of RPGs and even if their storytelling style is much more immersive, the approach toward the gaming community is much more interactive and much wider reaching in the wargames. You also have this hobby part of the game and there is another "payoff" to that. I'll leave "faulty product" and scale issues topic for another day. I just wanted to say that as great as it is to make a game and sell your products, it seems to me this small company has a lot of painful backlash to deal with on a daily basis and I can't feel but empathise with them while I read all the posts concerning various issues. *** Last thing I wanted to discuss is free speech and I'm writing about it because I had an issue with it recently and it still feels fresh while I've gone far off topic from it in the mass of text above. Most people read into things with a bunch of stereotypes thrown into a mix of their thought process. When someone breaks the norm with expressing their "subjective" thruths there is always some sort of a backlash and things usually finish off as an argument. Following these forums has shown me that people can look past their issues and work together on the internet. It means that we're not all anonymous trolls that go onto boards for some blood, but we can work as a society. I have some friends (and their friends, with their friends of their friends etc.) on facebook that start political, atheism, pandas who go extinct because they won't have sex, gmo or anti-gmo topics day in day out and they start as constructive and smart and always finish with some social self entitled intelectual cannibal has to come out at a top of the food chain. I don't get it why arguments and issues have to be won. They should be explored and resolved. I mean we play wargames, you get to beat your opponent, why waste your time on forums with trying to be moral, or intellectual winner when you can rather agree and fix the issue? I guess everyone deserves respect. Good night and until next hippie, peace loving topic. PS I was supposed to paint minis for an upcoming tournament and work on my papers for my studies, but I rather started a blog. Sigh...
